No iPhone 5S Pre-Order

I've had all the iPhones since iPhone 3 and I'm disillusioned. This looks like a poor incremental upgrade, deliberately stifling the capability of the 5, and launching it to regain lost PR value rather than sales.

Sorry - I'll happily pre-order a product online if I want it but there's no way I'm getting up and queuing for hours for a £700 phone. Fair play if you want to, and if the couple of days difference over online orders mean that much to you, but I've better things to do than be part of Apple's PR machine and perceived slow production.

I'll follow the hysteria online on my iPhone 5. I'm sure it will cope for a couple more days :)

Personally I can't see the point in upgrading from a tick to a tock hardware iteration with iOS devices anyway, the ticks normally last a further tock and a tick at least.

Agreed. For that price I could get another GTX 780 to have in SLI :) also iOS7 should be enough to make my iPhone 5 feel like 'new' again

GTA 5 will make me forget all about this lol

If i was an iPhone buyer i would upgrade on the ticks (3gs, 4s and 5s etc)

As it's the improved version of the current gens

I'm on a 5, but will be getting a 5S on launch. Really the only reason I can think of to myself, is that I can still get a good price on my 5, which will comfortably cover the cost of the 5S (under contract) If i wait til the 6. Then my 5 will probably not be worth as much and I'll have to dip into my pocket to get the latest.

I'm lucky enough to be in a position where I have a little weight within AT&T, cos the company i work for spends over 100k a yr with them, and I'm the account manager. So even though I'm not really eligible for the 5S, given my 5 is just less than a yr old, I just told my rep, please pull some strings.

However I'm completely unexcited for the 1st time in a new launch. Apple have completely lost the innovation as far as I'm concerned. I saw an HTC droid yesterday and it looked sharp. Sharper than the 5. However I'm sort of married into Apple, having all the apps on my iOS devices, and its not exactly a pile of poop. So this incremental update will just have to suffice for now.

I'll be upgrading from the 4S to the 5S, for the camera mostly, but no way I'll be queuing. I'll just order online - haven't decided on contract yet as I'm currently out of contract with O2 so need to go through all the options.

Approximate re-sale value of iPhones (setting up the sale the day before the announcement to maximise the price you can get):
Current model: £300 (currently the iPhone 5)
Current - 1 model: £200 (currently the iPhone 4S)
Current - 2 model: £100 (currently the iPhone 4)

There is virtually no difference between 16, 32 and 64 GB models (which surprised me), so don't "future-proof" your iPhone by buying the largest you think you'll need, buy the smallest you think you can live with.

Options (assuming you always buy the £600-ish model):

- Upgrade every year: Spend £600 each year, receive £300 each year (from selling the 1-year-old phone) = £300 per year
- Upgrade every 2 years: Spend £300 each year (£600 / 2), receive £100 each year (£200 / 2 from selling the 2-year-old phone) = £200 per year
- Upgrade every 3 years: Spend £200 each year (£600 / 3), receive £33 each year (£100 / 3 from selling the 3-year-old phone) = £167 per year

So as you can see, the sweet spot appears to be every 2 years. Any way you look at it, it's an expensive business, and double if your wife is also in the iPhone habit. Sigh. Oh well, at least we get tremendous use and enjoyment out of these devices.

I beg to differ. I'm in the USA, but I ALWAYS sell my last yrs model phone out of contract, for the same price i pay for the new one. Example last Oct, I sold my iPhone 4S for $400 easily. I put an ad in craigslist, within the hr the phone was gone, and during that hour the phone didn't stop ringing. That $400 covered the cost of the new iPhone 5 64GB that I bought a day earlier. The new phone comes with a new renewed contract, but that's the only caveat that i can see. Cost wise, I'm always getting the latest phone for a little inconvenience in having to make a private sale.

My company pays for my bill, they'd even pay for the phone, if i was happy to keep it for a couple of yrs. :p But for the sake of placing an ad, and taking a couple of calls from strangers on a Saturday morning, I'm always getting the latest, and its not costing me a penny.

Are the phone costs not subsidized by the carrier in the UK ?

I think with the 4S everyone said it was 8am, but it turned out to be 9am and was then a complete disaster trying to order. I don't think I got an order through until about 10am, and by then I ended up with two orders having gone through when I finally got confirmation.

Ah yes, that wasn't fun. I found using the Apple Store app worked slightly better than using the website, and I guess I'll be checking it on the way to, and once I'm at work next Friday.

Is a fingerprint sensor worth a £300 upgrade? If so, buy buy buy.

I'll wait until the 6 this time. Happy with my 5 :)

The 5's are going for about £300 on AVF, so I think the upgrade spend will be £200-250.

I wouldn't mind getting in on that 4G ting now - on O2 Simplicity now, have to shop around and see if O2 will gimme a 4G sim or I can get a better deal (on unlimited texts/calls, some web bolt on that I never max out).

Well I just had a look on Ebay and there are some like mine (32GB, Black, on Orange) on there at under £250 with 0 bids :( Also I worked out to get £300 actual spending money at the end, I would have to sell it for £350 or more (as Ebay + Paypal fees would cost near £50!). And seeing as how you can buy it new/refurbished and unlocked for under £380, I'd say they probably not holding that value as much now. Possibly because the 5 is disappearing completely, instead of just being pushed back one like it did to the 4S.

Maybe I will have to wait until the 6

Plus there is the fact that everyone will probably be doing the same as you right now and selling their previous phone, thus its a buyers market and the wrong time to sell.
