No life after shipping - mobo or cpu - where to begin?

Ok, need some help/advice on how to proceed.

Just moved over to NY and shipped my desktop over behind me. It arrived last week and even though I packed it thoroughly when I opened it up I found the cooler (stock Intel) had come off and fallen and taken my gfx card out of its slot also, cue much sobbing by me.

Now I know I should have taken all these out and sent separately wrapped etc but hindsight is a wonderful thing and it was all done in a bit of a rush so lets just accept its happened (it's taken me a few days!).

Anyway after putting everything back in, the fans spin up so there must be power going into the board (and phase led light is on) but I'm getting zero beeps to indicate booting up and so obviously nowt on the monitor. The ssd and hd are on as you can feel them if that makes sense.

That would indicate to me that either the mobo is knackered somewhere (likely if things have been knocking around on it) and/or the processor may be also (with the cooler coming off it) though they are pretty well protected once slotted in etc.

My problem now is due to having no access to other spare parts etc which are all back in blighty how on earth can I work out what is wrong without having to go pay some annoying geezer in best buy to test bits out?

My plan is to firstly reseat the cpu and see if it comes to life then failing that remove everything and then just start with mobo and cpu in and see if I get any beeps to indicate life.

I would really appreciate ppls thoughts on how to approach this dilemma. What do yout hink of my plan above? All and any advice very much appreciated.

Specs are:

Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) (I think as can't remember exact model for various ridiculous reasons)
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
XFX ATI Radeon 5850 XXX
OCZ Platinum 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Dual Channel
OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w Silent SLI Certified Modular Power Supply
Asus Xonar DG 5.1 PCI Sound Card
Samsung SSD
Other HD

At least one good thing has come out of this, I've finally gone and bought a decent sized case in order to refit everything once I work what's bust or not.

Thanks in advance ppl...

Wow wall of words. Going to take me a week to read that

more than likely its the pci slot damaged put the card in another slot.

As the cooler has been bouncing around it may well of taken some motherboard parts with it.
How come you went with dual channel ram rather than triple with the i7 setup.

I keep asking myself that and something I plan to remedy asap, shall we just say and error on my part. Any recommendations for triple channel?

I agree the mobo probably, suppose the obvious solution is to buy a new one and try plugging everything in again. Would you go for the same or something else?

Annoyingly I need to show the shipping company the 'damage' to sort any insurance - not sure how that'as going to wk as I can't see anything obvious on the mobo.

And cjgardens: Reading is good for you! ;)

Let me check things out some more and report back - really appreciate the help/advice ppl

And yr right about stuff being cheaper - significantly cheaper. Must stop looking at those huge tele's as well... ;)

you can always damage it more yourself. You now its damaged but make some superficial damage to it to make it look worse if needs be. Then they will be more likely to replace it.

i would say your cpu will be fine as would your ram....would be unlucky for your gpu not to work also.....have a look at the board and see if theres any sign of damage...if a large coolers been bouncing around in there it must have left a clue of some sort...is there any paste on a component thats come of the cooler? my guess same as everybody elses is mobo

Check the P4 line to CPU.....only say that because I recently MULTIPLY tried to boot mine with it unplugged and that's pretty much the way it behaves.

If your PSU is at the bottom, it's also possible something fell into it.

This may be a stupid qu but what's the P4 line? I'll check if you can explin what/where it is.

I tried again after unplugging everything and just cpu, mobo and ram and same result. Fans spin up but no one's home.

Time for a new mobo it is unless I can test the above I think. Having to wait for the new case to be shipped over from the UK as you can't get it over here...typical!

Ha ha not on a phone its not.

As said get a new board and if it turns out to be the board break a few resistors or what ever off and take a pic and send it them. I would

So made sure all plugs were in and still no joy so I finally got the new mobo (X58A-UDR3) and case. I've put the cpu, cooler, and ram in and connected the ssd to the sata_0 and all to the power.

Power on and it does exactly what it was (or rather wasn't) doing before. All the fans spin up, stop for a second and then continue unabated whilst mobo overvoltage leds and phase leds come on, wink off in time with fans and then come again in time with the fans and stay lit.

No post or beeps/noise at all. So it has to logically be the cpu that's knackered right...?
Agree...?

Anyone got any ideas/thoughts on further testing before I cry and have to go buy a new cpu...?

And just to be sure and for my peace of mind I don't need anything else plugged in surely, I can't think of anything..?

Thx in advance...

Have tried a CMOS reset and only one memory module.

Also double check the memory is in the correct slots, usually 2nd, 4th and sixth from the CPU socket.

Thanks RJC.

Did a CMOS reset and tried both mem modules separately in 2nd (DDR3_1) slot still no joy, exactly as reported above.

Has to be the processor then...? Only other thing I could possily think is the power lead to the ATX_12V_2X slots (cpu) is bust but I think that's highly unlikely.

Anyone else care to comment before I go buy a replacement...?
