Apart from Tesco, it would appear that no network does 12 month contracts any more (at least not on decent phones!), and with my current 12 month contract up for renewal in a fortnight, I really want to do another one!

Anyone found any recently please? Tempted by the Iphone 4 from Tesco, just for the shorter contract, but really want a Galaxy S, lol! :p

I think you'll be hard pressed to find 12 month contracts, it's pretty much 18 or 24 month contracts now as standard.

Get the Samsung Galaxy S! I have it, love it, simple. 18 month contract for me from mobiles.co.uk

i would recommend getting one if you can from a main dealer, the issue is with these 18 and 24 monther's is warranty, i find with these 3rd party ones not all cover your mobile for the full term. which is an issue if you sign up for a pricey phone

My mate has just started a 12month contract with T-Mobile.

Go through buymobilephonesdirect.net, they offer 12month contracts

I got my N900 on a 12 month contract with vodafone through mobile phones direct.

You pay more for the phone though, and the total amount paid over the course of the contract length is pretty similar when taking into acount the extra cost of the phone. So it's worth working out exactly how much it will cost over 12, 18 and 24 months.

I argued with vodafone , when my contract ended, and they wanted me to go on a 24 month contract. I said fine, but if this is the case, i`ll pay less per month, and sure enough, after a few calls back and forth, i got a great deal imho. I do have 2 contract phones with them, so this helps .. a lot

Thanks for the replies.

I don't mind paying more per month, or even more in total over a shorter term, I just don't want to be tied in for an excessive amount of time when technology moves on so quickly!

Why not do your bit for the planet and stick with the phone you've got. My phones 10 years old and I have no plans to change it, it does after all make phone calls which is all I ever wanted it to do. :D

I'll be recycling my current phone, will that help the planet?

If you're happy, fair enough, but I like new toys! :p

How will recycling your old phone help if a new one has to be manufactured to replace the one you have discarded.

I get the point that you like new toys but at some point we all have to grow up - do you not feel any social responsibility towards the planet and perhaps the mess you will be leaving for any offspring you may have/produce?

If I sell my current mobile on, then someone else won't be buying a new one, instead they'll be buying my old one and reducing their carbon footprint.

Second point, not really, I just want a new phone, and the ability to get another new phone in 12 months time, ad infinitum.

That's a sad indictment of the way many people live today. Perhaps age will change your opinion?

What I would add in addition to my post - number 13. I am not having a go at you personally but the ludicrous situation generally of people who really feel they cannot live without the next "must have" toy.

It is in the main an age thing though as what many people don't realise is that the entire business model of the mobile phone industry and the IT industry generally is based around "young people". Companies and manufacturers know from experience and plenty of psychological profiling that young people cannot resist "the next latest thing" whatever it is. I was guilty of this in my younger days spending, or a more accurate description would be "wasting" thousands of pounds of my hard earned cash on the latest "fast car" or motorcycle. You may not believe it right now but age does change you, not because money gets tighter as for many of us money is less of a problem. It's simply because as you get older you realise the futility of trying to keep up with the latest "thing" and that what you already have will do just as well for some time to come.

And what are you prepared to pay for that? If they provided top-end phones on 12 month contracts, either the up-front cost or the monthly charge would be huge in order to pay for the handset. Such contracts wouldn't interest the vast majority of customers.

If you're one of those who can afford such charges then just buy the handset outright and get a SIM-only contract from somewhere. If, OTOH, you're just expecting the networks to give you a shiny new top-end phone every year whilst paying nothing for the privilege, I suggest you join the real world.

Such as what phones on what kind of contract?

If these are "below cost" deals for the networks (which do happen - I've had some cashback deals which have turned a profit for me) then it's likely they've stopped doing these as the main intention was to get new customers from other networks who'd then stay with them. As customers get more used to switching around each time their contract is up and are far less "loyal", there's not as much mileage in this type of deal for the networks. Indeed the cashback deals you used to be able to get a few years ago are nowhere to be seen now.

I'll be 36 this year, how old do I need to be for an opinion change?

Once you get into your fifties - it's like you've just taken a magic pill - mind you some people are old at twenty something. Now I used to scoff when people said similar to me but I don't anymore. I think it's a change in priorities, things that once seemed to be very important e.g. keeping up with the Jone's etc. now seem to have little significance.

P.S. I have been on the same tariff since 1998 - Virgin EQ - I do think my Nokia 3310 is begining to look somewhat tired now but it just keeps plodding on. :D
