No picture through DVI after using HDMI

I had this problem this morning. I bought a HDMI cable for my LCD TV as it only has 1 VGA port and my Xbox 360 also uses VGA so I switched the PC to HDMI. The cable isn't that good though, the picture looked terrible so I switched it back to the VGA port and got "No Signal". Nothing came through at all, so I switched back over to the HDMI cable and completely uninstalled the drivers for the graphics card (Sapphire HD4850) including the Catalyst Control Centre. Then I ran the Driver Sweeper program from Guru3D and turn the machine off.

After that I plugged in the DVI cable into the second port on the card, and just removed the HDMI cable but left in the DVI to HDMI adapator. Turned on the machine, and it worked fine and I'm currently on the VGA port.

Thanks for the tip but it doesn't work for me :( I did everything you said but after I rebooted the machine I didn't get any picture using either cables. I rebooted a 2nd time and plugged in the DVI cable but still no picture. Then I switched to the HDMI cable and I get a picture. This is driving me mad! lol

RMA the broken card and get an nvidia then.
Or at least another ATI, that's "reset".

If ATI cannot handle this sort of thing (ie, unplugging a monitor, how unreasinable to suppose you could do that without trouble eh? ;) ), then you've probably saved me a load of grief by your terrible experience. I may end up reluctantly getting a GTX280.

Have you tried taking the card out of the box to force a hardware reset?
I knows nowt about ATI's.....is there a jumper or something to clear the card's BIOS?

I've got it working now..sort of.
I had an idea from flibby's post. I remembered my monitor also has a VGA input so I used a DVI-VGA adapter and that gives me a picture on my monitor! :D
Now all I have to do is remove the adapter and plug in my DVI cable and it should work.
If I don't report back then it's worked. I've spent most of the day trying to fix this. I don't think I'll be using HDMI again. Cheers.

You have much patience, if it were my card, it'd be in a box in a van heading home by now[1], if it was LUCKY......if not it'd be in a few pieces on the floor.

[1]Unless of course the manual/box bears a large red label warning of this issue.

hmm this doesnt sound good .. just gotmy dell 2408 .. ive got a geforce galaxy 7300 gt in there atm and waslookign at the 4850 as a replacement .

but if theres issues when switching inputs with ati i dont know ......

what if i'm just using the dell and have a hd-dvd player connected via the hdmi port to the dell ( pc connected on dvi )

is that a problem with ati ( works flawlessly on 7300 ) . ony issue i get is when i set hd-dvd player to 720 or 1080 p ... have to lower it down again and restart pc .. abit of a pain mind

I had a similar problem a few years ago with a 6800GT,it had allways been used on a dell tft using vga when i switched to the dell's dvi i got no picture. In the end i sorted it out by unpluging the monitor from the mains reconnected the dvi cable then switched the monitor on then the pc & it picked the dvi cable up.

This is a let down to hear, i had the same issues with a Sapphire HD3870 which is the reason why i sold it.

I had hoped they had fixed this issue with the 48xx series as i had planned to buy a 4870 :/

What make is your card? I have only heard this problem with Sapphire cards so far and on emailing them they said ATI/AMD were aware of the problem

I've been looking into this a lot more. I don't think it is the graphics card, it's the monitor. Mine is a Viewsonic VX2025. Some graphics cards can mess with the monitors EDID settings (whatever that is) and lock it into power saving mode. There is a tool called "DVI Recover" that may fix this. Also, Viewsonic has a tool on their website to recover the EDID settings. I'm going to try both now.

It's not quite the same, I tried that, I unplugged the monitor from the mains but it didn't work. I had to physically remove the power cable from the back of the monitor for it to work again.
