No POST displayed and BIOS not accessible following BSOD ***RESOLVED***

Hi all

Had a strange problem last night where my pc suffered a BSOD and promptly rebooted. This is something I am familiar with so was not too concerned. However, following the display of the GPU information (ram on Graphics card, etc) it failed to display the POST info and initially I thought I had a problem in the bios. I tried a reboot in order to access the bios and was greeted with the same blank screen at POST but was also unable to access the BIOS by pressing Del. Now for the strange part............I rebooted again and left it and again no POST or access to BIOS but it boots through the SATA screen into Windows as per normal and Windows is fine. BIOS is 1008.

My questions is: Has the crash in some way turned off the POST display and perhaps the USB support at boot preventing me from accessing the BIOS? Or does anyone have any other suggestions for this rather strange problem?

Many thanks

BA

First thing is try disconnecting the power...either by the switch on back or by pulling the cable out (this helps me when i get a nasty crash)

Also reset the bios and see if you can get it to POST

Yeah I had thought about resetting the bios. This happened at 1am so I will definitely try that one this evening when I get home from work. Power has been off all night (I did disconnect for about 30 secs last night) with no change this morning before I left for work. Windows is just fine, most odd. One similar bios related problem I have had in the past is that every now and then the bios will forget the boot order and try to read from the storage drive rather than the SATA raid boot.

OK here is my update on this damn problem. I have successfully flashed the bios according to EZ Flash but I still can't see the POST info and it will not respond to Del key. The joy of it is now that I have reset CMOS, my boot order is now messed up and it won't boot from RAID anymore. PC is now dead in the water.

REALLY REALLY need some ideas on this one please guys.

you should be able to modify your boot order in the bios if you can get back into it. clearing the cmos will have erased all your settings so they all need re-doing.

your raid is 'bootable addin card' or 'scsi', not HD

Yeah I know how to set the boot order and what to look for but it doesn't show the POST and doesn't accept the Del command. It doesn;t freeze at that point but continues past the Highpoint device search and then a different "Fastrack" screen appears saying no bios installed.

The point is after a successful bios upgrade I still can't get into the bios as it just won't display it or let me into it to modify.

Well after a couple of email exchanges with Asus's less than helpful tech support, I am truly none the wiser. I have taken the ram out, reset the CMOS, put in 1 stick of ram at a time, used ram from a working pc, flashed the bios a number of times (successfully according to EZ flash). The adaptor information continues to show as the pc is turned on but then there is no display of the memory checksum or the POST until the Highpoint page loads and tries to find devices.

Does this sound like a fried bios chip or does it sound like something else? Can one purchase bios chips for Asus boards? I must say I think their support is truly appalling and for that reason it will be the last Asus board I buy.

One final question I have is. If the board is FUBAR, is there any way to salvage the RAID array or is the build info held on the RAID chip on the mobo?

if you get the same board the raid array should be fine. just remember your settings for it, and set the array up the same once the board has been RMA'd (if its not out or warranty)

i have found that some boards are easy going with arrays from other boards, some are not and it doesnt work.

good luck! sounds horrible.

Well I thought I would post to inform you guys of outcome. I seem to have resolved the issue and I hope it is not just temporary. I am going to explain it here for anyone searching forums for similar problems in the future. Hope it helps ;)

Following a phone call to OC tech support the other day things were looking pretty terminal for my raid array as I was looking down the barrel of an RMA with no guarantee that they would leave the RAID chip settings alone.

Anyway, I rang my best mate who knows just about every work-around and "if you try this....." solution going. He suggested I dig out an old PCI graphics card and try to boot with that instead of the AGP. I asked, "But if it displays the adaptor info and RAID info surely it's not an AGP problem?" Apparently those screens are not actually part of the BIOS POST.

Could I find a PCI card? Could I heck as like! Managed to borrow one from a mate and low and behold I got straight into the bios and managed to reset the boot sequence and other necessaries. Replaced AGP card and booted up and whadaya know................1st job back up vitals on RAID!

Well nice one Richard and I hope this helps anyone else out with a similar problem. :D

Well done for reporting back on how you finally resolved your issue. If more of us did that and fewer numpties filled these threads up with requests for comments of their prospective hardware choices this forum would be more useful to all of us.
