Hey all,

Got a problem;

Turned my computer on this morning and nothing would display on the screen, the monitor seemed to be stuck on stand-by. I re-checked everything was plugged in properly, did a restart and still nothing. I've also noticed that both the keyboard and mouse are not lighting up. I've tried booting it up with no USB devices plugged in and again, nothing. I've checked both the keyboard and mouse on another computer and they both work fine.

Computer Specs:
Q6600 with Tuniq Tower
Asus P5k Deluxe
2gb Ballistix
BFG 8800GTX OC2
WD 500gb HDD
Samsung 2253BW - bout 4 weeks old
XP SP3

I've tried both D-Sub and DVI cables from my gfx card to the monitor and still nothing. I know it's kinda far fetched but my cat went behind my computer whilst it was on, it couldn't of short circuited it surely?

Really frustrating when it was working fine yesterday!, only thing getting in its way was a really long boot up - system tray taking ages to load up, desktop icons taking ages to appear, and as far as I know, its clean of both adware and malware.

Any help is much appreciated.
Cheers

I don't suppose you have a wireless desktop card in do you??

My sons computer had a very simular problem a few months back, everything was fine until i put in a belkin desktop card.

I tested the ram, mobo and cpu and all came up fine.

I then started thinking about the psu and the desktop card,Anyways in the end i re-installed windows and up to now (touch wood) it's been fine.

His started with the monitor not responding too,Then when it finally booted,The boot took about 10-15mins to load up.

Hi,

Nah not using a wireless card, just the built in ethernet on the mobo. My old computer used to do the same thing (Dell XPS 600) with a dell monitor and it would take about 20 mins to boot up.

I still think it may be something to do with the USB cos both my keboard (Saitek Eclipse) and mouse (Intelli 3.0) both used flash when my PC boots up.

Im going to take it apart anyways and check everything's fine inside. Will report back later.

Right just opened up and checked everything was connected fine, a slightly loose SATA cable on the HDD but that's it.

Took out the gfx card and reseated that. Checked the RAM was secure which it was. Again still nothing. I'm gonna leave it on for about 20 mins to see if anything happens, if not then I've no idea.

Surely some of you must know? :(

How do I do that?

Basically resetting the CMOS deletes all the user data stored in the BIOS. A good fix for various low-level problems. It stores this data when the PC is switched off by way of a small battery. So to reset the CMOS you must remove the battery for a couple of minutes, or set the jumper to the clear position. You need to remove all power from the PC and make sure it has discharged first.

As far as I can remember the CMOS battery and jumper on the P5K Deluxe are to the right/underneath the primary PCI-E slot. You might need to remove the graphics card to access them.

How do I do that?

unplug power cable, take out cmos battery and also switch the jumper on motherboard, leave for a min and replace battery and jumper.

if you've got motherboard manual it tells you how to clear cmos, if you've not got one then download from asus

I've just noticed that the speaker is connected to the mobo as well (Akasa Eclipse) but there is no POST beep, what does this indicate?

Just replaced battery and booted up, still nothing yet but gonna leave it for about 30 mins to see if anything happens.

Try 1 stick of RAM ? and then another. RAM doesn't usually fail a PC quite so soon into booting but it's worth testing.

Got some good news;

I've swapped the RAM around, it was in A1 and B1, i've changed this to only 1 stick in A2. And used a USB>PS2 adapter for my monitor. Booted up, greeted with one short POST beep and keyboard and mouse were both working. Had to change date in the BIOS etc but touch wood all seems fine at the moment.

EDIT: added the 2nd stick of ram in B2 and again, posted with one short beep and booted up fine.
EDIT2: removed the ps2 adapter for the monitor and again, posted with one short beep and booted up fine.
