So ive nearly got all of the components for my next upgrade, a MSI GD80 sat in the cupboard,Geil ultra DDR3 on its way from ocuk, either a i5 750 or i7 860 to be added but my question is will my current cooler be good enough for 4ghz on either of these chips ? , ive already got the socket 1156 bracket

its all going to be sat in a antec 900-2 case which is nice and cooler with good airflow, so im debating where to upgrade my noctua to something better , or will this cooler be fine for 4ghz ?

I would say yes for the i5 750 and no for the i7 860.

I have an i7 860 and the same mobo, msi p55 gd80 with the Noctua NH-U12P SE2.

Idle temps are great, circa 40 degrees

I have managed with the combo to get 4.2GHz, but the temps with prime 95 where approaching 90 degrees.

At 4.0ghz the temps are late 70 degrees with max at 85 degrees.

I have gone done now to 3.8Ghz and the temps are hovering around 70 degrees.

BTW I am using a coolermaster scout case

I have heard the i7 860 dumps about another 10 degrees over the i5 750 for a given overclock.

So maybe on an i5 you could get decent temps at 4ghz.
