A virtual machine. Effectively you can install another operating system inside your own and run the two independently.
I have a virtual copy of XP here (you could use Linux if you wanted too), its 'hard drive' is actually a file on the C drive of my main PC (c:\Virtualbox\XP.vdi) and everything I do in the virtual machine is stored here. I can install 100s of viruses on it or completely trash the OS and nothing will happen to my main OS. I can even roll it back to a previous state if I wanted too.
The software running on it is none the wiser either, it thinks it's a real PC.
I see it as safer because whilst I understand what Sandboxie does, the cynic in me tells me that it's not perfect. In-fact, if you read the FAQ it points out that unless you configure it properly programs can still read your sensitive data etc, so it might not be able to delete your files but it can read your passwords .
Either way, both ways are a vast improvement over doing nothing at all .
One thing to know about a VM is that, say if you install vista ultimate, the 3d stuff won't work, well it didn't when I had vista installed months ago, it may have changed now though?
read up here..nod32 comes in at number 12...i used to use it..its ok but it is not the best...i have tested most of these on this link as i get my software for free....bitdefender is the best...zonealarm is good..but the firewall protects your pc too much...norton deserves to be in the top 5 in my opinion as it has had a major overhaul....its quite good..but bitdefender i will always use untill it gets beaten by another program...
I'd agree, most of those results seem to just be generic viruses.
If you really want to check if NOD is working, safely, download the test virus from http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm -it just contains a test pattern most AVs should pick up and is perfectly safe.

i wouldnt read to much into the top ten reviews, for example no 2 Zonealarm uses the Kaspersky AV engine v6 while 3 Kaspersky 2009 uses the more advanced V8 engine !!
I find NOD32 a great program, although as i don;t actually see it doing anything i do know its working when i go on sites it deems inappropriate, which is a little annoying turning off the website protection whilst i get what i want then back on again
