Noise Cancelling Headphones

I so wanted some decent closed back cans so I can enjoy my films/music at night but since ive listened to my m8s HD-595s im cursed, I cant go listen to anything lower quality :(

Its a shame sound quality is sacrifised when closed/iems over open back designs.

I wouldnt say SQ is sacrificed at all, there just tonally different. I like the sound of open-air headphones, there acoustically transparent design gives a nice airy feel to the sound due to ambient noise spilling in, unfortunately bass will leak with this design, and in "most" cases bass response is usually sacrificed (relative to price).
In the case of closed back headphones the sound quality is usually very clear and detailed due to no audio "leakage" to the outside world, this means bass response is usually very good. But you don’t tend to get that nice "airy" quality of the sound which tends to provide more realism to the audio sound track.

HighlandeR, I think its simply because your haven’t tried out any decent closed back cans to compare then to your mates hd's, the 595's are great cans but that’s not just down to its open back design, Senn tend to uses some awesome transducers!
Beyerdynamic's DT770 closed backs prove my point, I've never heard such clinically accurate high and mid range reproduction in a set of headphones before bar none!

I can recommend the bose headphones. Business class passengers on American Airlines receive these headsets for the duration of the flight, and they were absolutely amazing in blocking all external noise. I had the view of 2 engines outside my window, and couldn't hear any noise whatsoever.

I think they're a must for any frequent flyer

i recommend the Shure E3c's i used them in a helicopter and they were great, you dont need electronic noise cancelling just a great fit with the shures

hmm interesting, your right I havent heard a decent high end closed back cans before, Ive just nailed down 100 quid on some senn HD595s though but now curious if the DT770s could have prooved any better :(

Just in most cases id prefer closed back where sound cant leak out much cos living in paper thin walls tbh lol

Might have to buy the DT770s think there the last ones before then went semi half open/closed back?

The one thing I do enjoy about the Senns is that airy/spacious sound they give it does make it much nicer.

na the new HD595's are great headphones! I'm sure they wont annoy to many people when you have them turned up loud.
yeah I was talkin about the old DT770 pros, pretty sure the semi open ones are the more expensive dt880's, that applies to the new range also i think, I havent tried them out yet though.
anyway you got some awesome sounding cans there!

Tis what I was thinking, did a lot of reading up on the DT770s and a lot of people say there more ideal for bassheads since bass is one of its strongest points.

Im definatly not into heavy bass.... running some further test the HD595s there not too bad I can turn it a notch down and its fine and still sounding sweet.

Which pair do u ultimatly use and why?

I can see myself dipping into audiophile heaven and becoming bankrupt ;)

Its a slippery slope m8.

yeah I have a pair of HD650s, there slightly modified though, there "de-veiled" (foam pads taken out) and have a little extra structure damping, also replaced the standard cable with a sweet aftermarket one made by a company called cardas, really makes them sound a whole lot better! they become much more clear and dynamic, and actually end up sounding like they have more clarity than the top grado's but with fantastic bottom end to boot!

it is an addiction! :o
