Noise limitation..

I've decided to keep my system until it dies, and invest a bit into it now. I've got a Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R board with a Q6600, an XFX Geforce 8800GTX, and a Hiper 580w PSU. In an Antec Sonata II case.

Now it's quite noisy really, it's got the Hiper PSU fans, a 120mm Antec fan on the processor, on top of a Thermalright Ultra-120. And worst of all I think is the stock helicoptor on the 8800GTX.

I think the loudest of them is the GPU, now i've seen items like the Accelero Xtreme 8800 around. Is it going to be any quieter? And worth the cost? Though that cooler seems to be quite scarse these days, although i've seen the Accelero Twin Turbo about, if that's man enough.. Or maybe there's a newer cooler that works OK on the old cards, I was specifically searching for that card you see.

The fan on the CPU heatsink is easily changed, is there a huge variance in volume of 120mm fans?

Is it worth changing the fan(s) in the PSU if it's noisy compared to the others? if I can find a quieter one i'm sure it's just a case of popping the lid, and a spot of soldering providing they're the same voltage. (All components are well out of warranty so i'm not voiding any warranty.

Any advice would be great. :)

before you do anything i would replace the PSU. theres a little club on overclockers of people who have had them blow up (literally) on them.

lets see if i can find the link

*edit*
aha, here it is, the hiper explosive club:

as for your other questions:
there is quite a variance in fan noise. here are some suggestions. you dont have to do all of them, but any of them will help

replace processor fans with akasa venoms
replace case fans with largest fractal designs that will fit (not suitable for use on processors or radiators i dont think)
buy a fan controller for said fractal design fans
buy that custom air cooler you were talking about, or a different one with the biggest fans you can find on it

if your feeling flush, go for a complete watercooling kit

No dice, I always thought it was really good, well in a personal experience not blowing up on me kinda way. I'll have an investigate.

Thanks for the link, i'll have a read. Interesting though as i've had mine since ~2007 without any problem at all. I thought it was great after a brand new Antec PSU died after only having it 3 months. Luck of the draw I suppose as at the time everyone was rating Antec PSU's quite highly.

Speaking as an ex hiper owner, get rid of your psu. You can pick up a nice quiet xfx or corsair at a decent price. They will have much less of a probability of turning your entire rig into a burnt paperweight.

Some nice quiet 120mm fans and a controller would be a good bet for reducing noise tho. The akasa junior is a good cheap little bay mounted Thingy. As far as fan makes go, the sharkoon silent eagle and akasa apaches have been good for me. Barely hear them.

Never really thought about a fan controller but that looks quite a nice subtle bit of kit, I think i'll invest! Thanks for the idea!

Anyone had any experience of the GPU coolers on an 8800GTX? That's the only thing that's uncharted ground really. The fans and the controller seem good for the others. :)

The awesome Thermalright Shaman will fit the 8800 gtx. This bad boy will silence your GPU for sure. It'll probably fit any future card you decide to get as well. On a 8800 gtx I'd imagine you'd be able to run at really slow fan speed.

why does it not say that it supports an 8800GTX on overclockers (or the review site below)?

also, the cooler blocks 4 slots below it according to this review place: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/thermalright-shaman_3.html

Thanks for that i'll give it a look. Just seems worth more than the card TBH, but as you say it's going to work on future cards I suspect.

Is this compatible? it's got the highest rating on OCUK, I know it doesn't list mine but it lists the 8800GT, are they a different fitment so close in the range?

Also people say coolers often only fit the standard reference cards and sometimes not aftermarket cards as they stray from the standard spec. Would my XFX card be ok ya think with the ones mentioned because of this?

EDIT: By the looks of this it's not even listed in here so i'll probably avoid that.

Would it be an idea also to get RAM heatsinks if i'm doing away with the OEM cooler? Like these perhaps? Or do some coolers even come with them, maybe wishful thinking?

I don't know mate but suspect that they didn't bother to mention the 8800GTX because it's very much an older generation now.

According to TR themselves though all 8 series are supported.

If you have 4 slots available then this cooler will be the quietest and most effective solution out there at the moment. Alpenfoehn have a product coming out eventually which may better it but we'll have to wait for that one.

Yes it's big but then it's holding a big 140x25mm fan on top of it.

Unless you have loads of PCI/PCI-E or SLI cards it's really not a biggie.

At full speed, 1300rpm it's noticeable but I game at around 850rpm and it's then below the noise floor of my Noctua CPU HSF fans running at 1000rpm and PSU fan running at 1000rpm.

I think your options are limited as most aftermarkets for 8800 GTX have long since been discontinued.

There's nothing below my GPU so that'd fit i'd think. I'd just be concerned about the board flexing with the weight. As it's quite a long card and that doesn't look light.

Scythe Ninja Wire, cable tie or bungee cord elastic if needed. I don't bother with mine as the power cables keep it straight as you can see from the above image the card is as straight as a die. One guy left the stock cooler backplate on to provide support.

Yeah suppose there's plenty of choices if I am concerned. And yeah the power cables going to it would be easy to tie them up somewhere giving them just enough slack to hold the card up.
