Hi all, my HD (which is about 2 yrs old) has started to make a zrrrrr-ing noise when I boot up.

The boot goes flawlessly (and seems quicker but could be my imagination) and the zrrrr-ing stops when I get to desk stop and I never hear it again or have any performance problems.

Except when I install games: the install takes ages.

I suspect my HD is dieing; does this sound the case? The PC potters away quite happilly at any other time, just on boot up does it get the zrrrrs.

Any ideas what it is?

P4, 3 GHz
XP
1 G Ram
6800 XT Card.

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately no. It sounds like faulty DVD drive but I checked the PCs DVD drive and its not spining when I hear it.

Sorry I can't be any more specific.

It's more a constant zrrr-ing, like the rotation of a tiny propeller. My fan works a ok though. It's not the click-tsst of a dvd drive not reading a disk, more a constant zrrrrr-ing that cuts out just before my desk top pops up in the boot sequence.

Just today it went away for two boots after I accidently kicked the tower. Could it be that the screwws are coming loose somwhere?

Thanks for the info, I think I will have to chance it for a month or two (till I get my raise!). My PC is a games machine anyway so no real stuff will get lost if it dies.

One last question though: Do new HD caome with an operating system on them?
