I've got one of these hard drives - Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000

Every so often, but consistenly, it makes a clicking noise. It has done this from new and is getting quite annoying now.

Is there anyway of stopping this? I just plugged it in and that was that in terms of set up so I'm wondering if I should've done something a bit cleverer?

Just a single click? The Hitachis do that occasionally, something to do with recalibrating the heads as the drive temperature changes.

Can you use Hitachi Feature Tool to set the acoustics to your taste?

I have a 250Gb PATA in my sky+ box set to minimum noise level, very quiet

You're welcome! I must admit i do like the Hitachi drives, i have several sata raid0 sets and have found them very reliable. I guess they know a thing or two about HD design seeing as they (IBM/HitachiGST) invented the hard disc over 50 years ago!
