hi my Lappy is 2/3 years old now and is fine powerwise for the kids to browse etc. however now a fan on the motherboard or some other cooling has started rattling like a git.

normally if this was a desktop id whip it off and replace it but im not so confident taking a laptop apart.

is it an easy job ? do i need special tools ? any advice for this?

is it worth paying a tech shop to do it ? and if so do you know how much they could charge ?

any help / advice appreciated.

whats the make and model could probably advise better, a shop would probably charge an hourly rate, you can strip and fully clean a laptop in < 30 mins if your good, so I wouldnt pay more than £20 for the privilage. But having said that if the fan is beyond salvage in that is not just debris causing the noise then its new fan time.

sorry for the delay. its a hp Pavilion dv2000.

ive heard a similar noise on a desktop on a northbride fan which was just cloged to death with dust this sounds like a similar issue or maybe dodgy ball bearings. just becoming a bit too loud.

it could be getting clogged hence spinning faster, ideally it would need a strip down to clean properly, the dv2000 isnt the simplest of laptops to strip I have one my self and have stripped these before, I would definately let someone who has some laptop disassembly skills do it rather than a generic pc repair shop as these have some very small cable connectors that break easily unless you know how they come apart.

New fans seem to be goin for a bout £10-£12 on the bay so not overly expensive to replace if it does need replacing.

Cheapest option would be to blast the fan grills with compress air but if it has built up a carpet against the heatsink it wont break up like a normal dust build up.
