Hi guys,

I was wondering what you'd think about this situation.

Basically, got neighbours above me who literally stomp around to the point that the stuff in my flat shakes. It's started effecting me to the point that it puts me in a bad mood whenever it happens. It's so bad I can tell when they're in and when they're out, when they've gone to the kitchen etc etc. It's horrendous.
They even do free weights and drop them.
If I put some headphones on to drown it out, I can still feel the vibrations!

Now, I know people will say that I should speak to them... I have, many times. They say they'll try harder, but if anything it gets worse.

What can I do?

I never hear the TV or stereo or anything like that, just footfall and 'impact' type noise.

I reckon nuking them from orbit might be a bit expensive, and possibly illegal.

:(

I bought the place about a year ago, it'd be a bit costly and the flat's gone down in value :(

I shouldn't have to move!

I think they rent. Can't they bugger off instead?

Yes I feel for you.

Noisy Neighbours can quickly become the bane of you life.

Really - what do they say when you knock the door? Who answers it?
Is it the same person every time?

We're going through this at the moment. Exactly the same as you, stomping is the only thing we hear 90% of the time.

It literally sounds like they never just sit down, they're always stomping about. We've been woken up at 3 in the morning by heavy stomping etc...

I've been up a few times to ask them to stop, but exactly the same results as you, it only seems to get worse.

I eventually called 101 one Sunday night at about 11:30pm, they sent the police out to tell them to shut up, but it hasn't stopped. We got a log from environmental health, and have been keeping notes for the last month or so.

They just say they'll try, but they can't help 'how they walk'. It's like someone's walking around with diving boots on, at speed. Nah it's been both of them at different times, and each on their own.
It's probably the build quality of the flat to an extent. But, the people below me I've never heard, and they've never complained about me. I've even asked them about it and they rarely hear anything at all.

Yeah, I've been woken numerous times too, and they shout off the balcony a lot too when they've had a drink and sometimes when they haven't. It's like being at uni again, but 10 years later!? Because at uni if you told people to shut up, 9/10 times they did.

I'm not sure the standard complaints procedure would do anything besides get them more agitated and unhelpful?

I saved up for a number of years for this place, and the flat itself is perfect for me. Being serious for a second, it's really a rather depressing situation to be in ! :(

I feel for you mate, I've had people above me in the past that just don't seem to know how to sit still even for one minute, I sit there thinking what hell are they doing constantly walking about, makes no sense to me sometimes, also they should at least take their shoes off tbh, that helps a lot, it's lack of consideration for those below them.

What you describe is >exactly< what I've had moments thinking. It's constantly back and forth, like they have some kind of ADD.

You're right though, it's a complete lack of consideration for anyone other than themselves.

But, seems i'm powerless to do anything. It's not like the local housing association (which I think they rent from) would do anything unless I reported them for murdering someone. Even then it'd be a stretch.

Ah it's horrible.

We used to have a modern terrace house with both neighbours stairs against our living room walls.

You can't get away from that constant clonking up and down the staircase.

Used to think one of our neighbours ran up and down the stairs just for the fun.

We then enjoyed very loud drum and bass music at all hours to make things even better.

Fortunately for us we could afford to move out.

It's a miserable business and as I say - I feel for you.

[why do I always double-space? Guess I'm just neat]

mine are noisy, they are quite old and a bit deaf, so they have their TV on so loud you can hear it accross our house... thats on from like 10am-6pm, they seem to be doing DIY every week, drilling/hammering starts at about 9am, seriously every week they are drilling or hammering something. and the neighbour the other side is in a band, so get a lot of drumming and guitaring :(

i thought many times about making a complaint about my neighbour, i can put up with the TV during the day, but drilling/hammering on our wall at 9am on a sunday... **** off.

I can hear my upstairs neighbour though i've kinda got used to it unless he drops something, he's a fat ****.

However there is a neighbour 3 floors up that plays A LOT of loud bass, you can actually hear the bass down here. I'd hate to live right below him, that person should complain to the council. Sometimes it goes on from 12 till 2am in the morning. Sounds like a nightclub across the street.

You should NOT be able to have a Subwoofer in a flat, it should be made a rule

I'm pretty sure there's a process to follow that involves taking detailed notes of all the disturbances and then calling ... someone? I can't remember the name of the agency/department. There was a thread a few months back where some great advice was given, all of which, unfortunately, I've forgotten.

If I won the lottery I'd live in a house surrounded by woodland, I do hate the human race no regard to anyone else

Yeah, but short of chucking them out on the street, i'm not sure what could be done.

It would have to be extreme for them to even consider that. And I really don't think my disturbances from up above would count as extreme. :(

Amen to that. Detached house for the absolute win. Oh and a cinema room, and a games room complete with snooker table... :D

Yes, through your local council, environmental health dept, sometimes they will even give you a decibel meter to monitor the sound pollution.

Well you should just impress upon that neighbour that their music is not acceptable to you and everyone else. Does it bother other neighbours?
Regardless - confront the noisy neighbour. Just knock on their door and tell them that their noise is bothering you.

talk to them maybe. Remember Jesus said "Love Thy Neighbour" The man had a point too hence why society has neglected getting to know those who live next door to them.

Otherwise get a dog and set it loose :D
