Hi there, I saw this comment - https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...00rpm-hdd-16-18tb-drive.18974711/post-3655568 and had me wondering about my recently acquired Exos Enterprise X20 20TB Drives (Seagate ST20000NM007D).

They are REALLY loud.

The idle noise isn't too bad, but the clacking from the heads is really loud, (can be heard from outside my office), and certainly much louder than my Barracuda Compute 10TB drivers which are silent in comparison.

These are 'enterprise' drives so I expect they are less geared for a consumer/home environment but the WD Reds I've owned in the past also subjectively have been much quieter.

One other point to mention I have 2 of these at the moment housed in a DS418 where they aren't recognised as supported drives by synology, wonder if that could contribute also?

Appreciate any thoughts or others' experiences with these particular series of drives.

Here's a quick (extreme, I'm running the synology benchmark) example

*Edit* to include example.

I have noticed they've 'quietened down' over the past week as they've been in use, but still sound more like the 20mb hdds of the 80s than a modern drive.

Learning to live with it, but from what I've read helium filled 'enterprise' drives are just noisy, price you pay for the longevity. Probably another thing to mention as an aside is these drives aren't yet 'supported' by synology on any of their chassis' yet. They work obviously, but you don't get the extra seagate options you would using barracudas.

Are you still able to use them in your DS418 despite not being supported?
Yeah they are perfectly fine, the only thing I've noticed is that my older ironwolfs (supported) had a 'seagate' tab in the disk manager which allowed some additional seagate specific configuation which isn't available for these x20s. Performance and raid modes work to spec.
