Nokia E71 Successor / E72

Depending on what the price of the handset will be, I think the updates may be minor, but address most of the few flaws the E71 had. Great to see the 5MP camera, 3.5mm jack, Symbian 9.3- think they all should have been on the E71 to begin with. Also glad to see the same form factor has been retained, and the stainless steel body too, looks like it's only 1mm bigger width wise.

Shame that the screen res doesn't seem to be any higher though, and no 30fps video recording, and not sure what the optical trackpad thing will be for. I don't see a great reason to upgrade from an E71, but it will be just as stunning a phone.

I've been using an E71 since it was released. The only things wrong with it are the 2.5mm headphone socket and rubbish camera. It's a great, unassuming device otherwise.

HSDPA has also been bumped to 10.2MBps (if you can find anywhere that supports it). Can't remember if the E71 was the same, but E72 will have Nokia Messaging for life (like the E75).

Also a digital compass, active noise cancellation on calls, UBS charging and an updated Quickoffice for Office 07 support.

Good features, a definite update from the E71, though I have to say the looks are not quite as good as the E71 imo. Still, on this sort of phone i'd say that looks aren't so important.

Shame it hasn't got a dedicated camera button instead of pressing 'T' to autofocus.

Other than that it looks like a decent update, especially the USB charging..!

About time Nokia started using that.

I have been through so many phone and I just keep going back to my E71, its really the best phone ever made.

I was hoping for the a higher screen res but other then that the new one looks good.

Hmm, prefer looks of E71 over the E72

Not much of an upgrade really, camera will probably be below par for a 5mp anyway.

i take it no-one else realised that this wee beastie has a six hundred MHz cpu, compared to the paltry 370MHz in the E71?

i'm not saying the E71 is slow, because it isn't, but this thing is going to be BLISTERING

<edit>
ooh, and it looks like Nokia's separated the "Chr" and Ctrl keys, allowing you to copy-pasta properly!

Is it me or has the e72 got a bigger keyboard also? Would have been nice to increase the screen size rather than the keyboard.

the keyboard does look slightly bigger, the bezel at the bottom is smaller.
nokia won't increase the screen because that'll change the form factor of the phone from candybar to brick - just look at the E61 :)

its the replacement/alternative for the navi key (but the navi key's still there). sweep your finger over it and it'll move the cursor. there are movies of it in action on youtube.

good for a quick swipe if you're navigating menus, or for the mouse-cursor in browsers, but the navi key's still there for long lists and if it breaks, i imagine.

i cannae wait!

Might be worth it if the changes appeal to you, plus it depends on how much your contact is as to whether you'd actually get it free or not.

I love my E71, it's one of the few phones around that feels like it's decent quality and not plastic tat. It does everything I need too, but definitely do with a better camera and 3.5mm jack plug so the E72 is a winner for me. I'll probably sell my E71 and get the E72 if it's not a silly price.
