Nokia N70 problems

Hi all,

I think my N70 is great but unfortunately I've been having problems with it.

Firstly, it's absolutely DOG slow. Press contacts and its often up to 6-7 seconds before they actually load. Same with messages and even the menu. I get the impression that ridiculous hard coded Orange menu is holding things up. It also doesn't actually say 'Battery low' when the battery is low - the display simply lights up as it would do if it did have a low battery warning...

But perhaps more important, it keeps powering down. This is very annoying, I'll reach into my pocket and it will be turned off.

It's about 5 months old, so I rang Orange, who were literally about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. I was told that my issues were not 'service affecting' and as such, were not covered by the phones warranty. I did point out that a phone that turned itself off was rather service affecting, but this fell on deaf ears.

What can I do about this? I rang Nokia who said sure, send it to us, but the turnaround is 4 weeks. Hmmm, no phone for 4 weeks. Would a simple software update suffice? Why are Orange being so obstructive?

Take it to a Nokia repair centre (like CPW Repair Centre) and see if they can sort the problem out on the same day (they usually take the phone away for a few hours).

Most problems (including the ones you have listed) can be solved simply by updating the phone software which will be done free of charge by Nokia repair centres as long as you bring along your proof of purchase and tell them the faults you are having with your phone.

In the worst of cases, a hardware fault might have occured and the phone will have to be sent back to Nokia for repair, this usually takes about 2 weeks with Nokia.

Finally, remember to back everything up before giving the phone to the repair centre as all data will be erased.

You can find a Nokia Service Centre by going to this site, ring them up beforehand to check whether they've actually got the software in store, as CPW didn't have the software for my phone when I visited.

let us know how you get on matey, as i have the problem of it being veeeeeeeerrrrry sloooooooooow :(

have been told i should get a larger memory card as the n70 likes to have at least 64mb of free space on the memory card, and to almost free up All the phones memory alltogether!

mine's also VERY slow. It doesn't turn itself off though.

I got mine at the end of September from Vodafone (the day it was released) so I think I'll try and get a software update as well.

One thing I will point out is that the main cause of slowness on the phone is either a lack of memory space or memory fragmentation (just like a PC).

The main reason people notice a speed increase if they get the software updated is that the phone has everything deleted as part of the process.

The same effect can be gained by backing up important data, formatting the phone then putting only the relevant information back on (which will be in a nice unfragmented file system).

When I had an n-gage (which is also a series60 phone) I found that erasing the call log and clearing off all the crap seemed to help speed it up. I don't know if this is still an issue with the newer S60 phones but it might be worth a try. I doubt it's got anything to do with the power problems though.

I had an n70 on orange for about 3 days, but couldnt cope witht he poor menu structure and the performance of the phone, got it on vodafone after seeing the better setup and performance, however mines got nice and slow again :(

How does one do that then? as my 6680 is the same slooooooooooooow

All having the same problems hmm, just emailed vodafone and nokia and waiting on a reply other than an automated one

Im not happy with my N70, im getting to the point now where im just going to dig out my red 8210 and go Retro

The thing thats annoying is they sell for quite a lot online, and no mention of issues at all... i feel sorry for future owners if theres no fix...

You do know you can just go into a store, they'll send it off for repair and reflash the software, and give you a loan phone in the mean time, should only take like 4-5 days.

EDIT - also ringing them is faster than an email and free.
