Nokia N900

How did you manage to get Vodaphone to cancel your N97 contract?

I'm still waiting for the copy of my account notes from vodafone data protection office - a nice lady at vodafone customer services helpline put a note on my account saying I get really limited service and suggest I get a refund and cancellation of my contract. Phones4u said they'd give me a refund only with proof from vodafone I was getting terrible coverage - they wouldn't give me a refund when I initially got vodafone to put a note on saying I got "variable coverage" as the coverage map says.

The thing is, won't it end up costing a lot more to get the phone SIM-free from nokia and get a minutes & data contract? Likely to cost £20/month for the contract and then best part of £400 for the phone...

Wish they'd release details of when (or if) the HTC dragon/passion will come out, since that looks fantastic and I'll need to get a new phone soon (unless phones4u decide to be difficult again). I could do without a hardware keyboard with a 4.3" capacitive screen and snapdragon.

You did read the other pages of the review didnt you..;) Its pretty indepth to me. Not entirely sure I trust your judgement after your earlier post saying the majority of reviews of the N900 were poor! - which quite frankly wasnt true.

To be fair, many reviews have had some reservations about the n900 - not saying it's crap but that it has drawbacks.

Id agree with him - Windows Mobile/camera is the HD2's achillies heel, the keyboard/camera of Droid are dire - the N900 is the best of the latest gen imo (of course the number of apps is its biggest flaw, resistive capacitive is completely moot, unless you've actually tried the device).

HD2 with android on would be nice.... :)

I'm not actually that fussed about the camera on a phone. The n97 takes crap pics in bad light with weird white flash fog messing up the pics, the colours are washed out etc. It's okay for taking quick pics, but nothing compared to a cheap compact camera.

Then you clearly don't have much call for detailed reviews... each of those 5 pages was woefully sparse in any detailed testing... compare that to a typical BGR or Slash review and it is frankly laughable.

He's probably only read one or two. :p

Id say the majority have been positive, but sure there are some with reservations, but to say the majority have been bad - like Richdog did, is disingenuous.

err, its not a detailed review - its a comparison, it touches the main points - so what points do you disagree...? Its rather valid reasoning imo.

Done, you now have 42 votes
Are you going to the meetup on the 17th?

bah no! Missed out, I checked in the morning, then the evening when they had all gone. ah well hopefully should be getting mine on Tues (if some people are to be believed).
ohh 42, nice, thanks:)

Saw this post elsewhere - very critical of the device

OK, after the disappointment of the delivery dates or lack of them, I decided that I had to go see and actually hold a n900, sort of cheer myself up a bit. You will be glad to hear that I mostly disagree with the link to the post above...
First things first, I thought the build quality was good, the device had a nice solid feel to it, definately not plasticky or light. The keyboard had good size buttons, which did feel a bit plastic, but it slid out nicely with no travel and I didn't feel like I would break it with use

I was pleasantly suprised by the size, small it isn't, but it is by no means the brick that I have heard it called by some, and yes it is 'pocketable' - which for me is important..

The screen was top notch, nice and clear, though the UI will take a bit of getting used to, I was thinking that it didn't feel responsive at all until I realised that I wasn't pressing hard enough!!
I had to scroll down through the list of wireless networks, so the wireless chip obviously works and seems to be picking up lots of networks

The 4 desktops are a nice touch that I can see me making a lot of use of. Im not sure over the UI - in places it was really slick, and felt fast, I kept opening as many windows as I could find, and I loved the task switcher, pure genius. But at times it was really laggy, and I could have had a snooze while waiting for ovi maps to open - I have no idea what firmware revision the phone was on, maybe that was an issue, but lag it did in places and badly...

Overall, I was impressed, and it was good to actually touch one and have a go using it, though I left the store wanting it even more than I did before I went in..

No MPD rep in store and the nokia guy seemed pretty clueless about it in general apart from it will be out next week, but Id take that with a pinch of salt...

I had a little play with it in the nokia store in town, couldn't connect to the net so couldn't test the browsing. I was in a hurry so didn't really get into much detail, will try poping in again and have a much more indepth play(as long as the customer helper/s let me :) ).

Most Nokia stores will let you use the store's wifi to test out the internet if you ask.

Think I'm going to be ordering this just as soon as I see what contracts are definately on offer, only seems to be Voda on MPD currently so will wait a week ish I think.

I've been on pre-order since last month via MPD, I was lucky enough to get one of the t-mobile contracts. Best estimated for delivery is next tuesday, Im hoping that they will honour this as Im going to the n900 meetup on the 17th and it would be nice to actually have the device by then..

same. got the t-mobile one. Weird how you can't get it through the site now. Last night it was still on MPD but said you had to ring to preorder and couldn't do it on the site, now its gone :/

I just got mine sim free as im on o2 simplicity after getting out of my orange contract with my n97. Anyone found any good apps for it yet im hoping to have a few things for when it appears.

There arent many at the moment - you'll be able to download them direct from the N900 ovi store, plus have a look in the 'extras' section, there you can download beta applications. Personally Im really looking forward to the N64 emulator (when its ready)..

(some here: http://maemo.nokia.com/maemo-select/applications/)

What was the T-Mobile contract, was it especially good?

Got a 12 month contract, so the phone works out at £430.
Plan on dumping the sim, and using my work sim for the 'free' data

I think it was around 35 p/m for the unlimited data web'n'walk, but not needed in my case
