Nokia N900

Bloody USB connector has broke on mine, just flat out refused to charge this morning. Has to go to Nokia for replacement :(

really! damn man i feel for u, i'v been lucky with no issues except noticed i have 1 stuck pixel. i tried them videos for few mins didnt work....

not too bothered as i have few mates in cpw service centre they said if i want the screen changed they can get it done under warranty, so i think i will wait till i have real issues and have it fixed.

what did vodafone say? on nokia forums a nokia admin said nokia will warrant broke usb as its a known design fault.

So OviMaps doesnt work on it?
I have loaded up OviMaps and messed around inside it, but I haven't done anything yet - I'm going on a trip tomorrow and I thought I would see if it works (I know the route though :D). There is a "routing" button on my screen when I open it up, and it asks me to pick a start and a finish point - but I'm guessing it doesn't work, based on the comments here. I'll update when I'm back from this weekend.

Is it true that you cannot text in portrait mode?
No, I don't think you can - it's never been an issue for me - I think the phone is too big for one-handed use.

On a personal note, I've found a superb Sudoku (which lets you mark each box and generally works a treat) called Eighty-One and I've downloaded all the apps I need - my phone is working just great (apart from the "not lighting up when an SMS comes in" issue I mentioned previously.

Ok now I'm properly interested.

Potentially does this mean the N900 could be converted to be an Android phone with identical functionality to other Android devices?

Well since it's a Linux based phone already it should be a lot easier to port it over than to other phones, which already have varying degrees of success.

Sure i read an app description somewhere about making the onscreen dialing pad useable for txting but for the life of me i can't find it now! i find it quite easy to type one handed using the onscreen keyboard, but much prefer to slide it open as less random mis-presses (and i've not even got big fingers!) :)

My USB port seems fine and i'm unplugging and replugging it all the time, 5-10 times a day at least... It's even swung from my desk on its cable a number of times before now by mistake! It seems very strong and firm, but i guess that isn't the case in reality, must take more care swinging my chair around! ;)

I think the important thing at the minute is getting everything working, but that's where it is a lot easier than porting android to Winmo phones. Usually stuff like the camera or GPS or even screen requires drivers, and if they don't exist for Linux then you have to make them yourself, which takes a long time. But since Memeo is Linux the drivers will be there, you just have to find them and - essentially - copy and paste them. But the link i posted is just proof of concept, i don't think it's quite ready for everyday use yet.

Anyone got there hands on the new Brodit kit yet? thinking about ordering one when i can find somewhere with stock.

Also is there any sat nav programs available yet with maps already stored. Don't like the idea of relying on getting a signal to download the maps on the go. Only one i've seen is the Sygic program which is still not available.

Surely you'd be better off just going for one of the current Android native handsets rather than running something that may always be just a hack (albeit with the potential to be a good one)?

Yeah, seems I can actually take it to CPW here and it'll be done under warranty. Nokias callcentre is a bit of a ballache, all manner of buttons need pressed before you speak to someone, and then I couldn't understand them much. :D Still, I managed to get them to confirm that if I bring it to a particular CPW they'll do the fix for me.

Didn't ring Vodafone, its not really their problem is it?

Just can't find my damn receipt now. :(

My problem is that I absolutely love my N97 but cannot tolerate its inability to hold a signal - its ruining the phone for me.

I want an N97 that works, but I fear such a thing doesn't exist. The N900 seems the next best thing but I keep hearing thats that put me off, plus it doesnt feel as well built :(

There is nothing easy about porting OS to the phone that doesn't have manufacturer support for it. With all the needed proprietary acceleration and hardware driver quirks there are enough differences between maemo and android for this project to be a nightmare in terms of it being fully functional end user day to day phone, as much as it might be fantastic programming challenge. Look - it's hard enough for the lot to come up with software keyboard, yet we are talking about paying few hundred quid on a premise it might be running unsupported hackindroid some time soon.

If you want android phone, buy an android phone.
