Nokia N900

Does anyone use there N900 with a car charger?

I've been using my old 5800 charger that i brought from a major retail store, none genuine, with the adaptor that came with the n900.

However when using Sat Nav software and playing music through my car's HU (headphone jack into front aux), The phone actually uses more battery power than it can take from the charger. Is this normal or is it a problem with the charger?

The Mains charger than come with the phone charges it fine. I've also found that when charging from my pc at work using the data cable, it charges very slowly too.

Comes down to how much current the charger provides.

USB is only supposed to provide a 1/2 an amp though some manufacturers ignore this and provide more*. Most powered USB hubs also provide more.

I think the official N900 charger provides something like 1.5 amps and thus will charge 3 times faster than minimum-spec USB.

Likewise older chargers for less powerful phones most likely provide less current. It's specs are usually displayed on the charger between the pins.

Cheapo car chargers tend to particularly crap here, often providing the bare minimum needed to get a charging indicator on the phone they are designed for, which may well be woefully underspecced for an N900.

* and some device manufacturers also ignore this and require more. Anyone remember those godawful Alcatel SpeedFrog modems that wouldn't work with Via motherboards without the use of a powered USB hub? Those awful things needed about 0.68 amps in order to function.

noob question but I'll ask anyway...

Just installed AutoDisconnect to see if it lives up to the claims over battery life. basically now whenever I'm not using the interwebs it's using 2G not 3G. Is there a notable difference in voice call quality between the two? If not then it looks like I really could double the time between charges using this app, if it's bad on 2G then I think I'll go back to "normal"

Cheers.

Don't think there's any difference except that 2G is a much more energy efficient protocol for voice calls IMO. 3G literally gives priority to the phones with the best signal relative to everyone else on the cell so when using 3G your phone is trying to shout over everyone else for attention and wasting energy in the process.

You can tell that 3G was designed by Americans.

Just a heads up that PR.1.3 firmware release is out now (at least for those running international firmware revisions :D )
Im not sure if the UK version is out yet....

Firmware now available via the Ovi suite, but not OTA or on tablets-dev.nokia.com

Downloading now. Will let you know how I get on.

e: Lost all my installed apps, despite backing up and restoring the application list. Grr. Perhaps the backup offered by the Ovi suite will restore the apps properly, I used the on-device backup.

Then again, probably a good opportunity to get rid of all the crap I had installed.

Probably lost all my angry birds saves too, since they are stored on the root drive.

All in all, thank **** for the Faster Application Manager.

Holy thread revive
My N900 has randomly decided it doesn't want to send texts, i've been texting a fair bit today and then suddenly when ever i try to reply to a text it says "Incorrect number". It's very frustrating! Anyone know why this might be happening?

Go into 'Conversations', then 'Settings' at the top, make sure 'SMS centre number' is set to 'Use from SIM card'.

If that doesn't work, call your provider and get the correct manual settings to input, if that still doesn't work get them to confirm the SIM or send you a new SIM card :)

Oh a side note, anyone used MeeGo on theirs yet? I'm probably gonna give it a try soon as very bored of maemo at the moment (plus phone is being buggy) :)

Basically ditched my N900 for an Orange San Francisco which should be a totally inferior phone (based on spec) but I'm so much happier with it. Maemo has been a total let down for me :(
