Nokia N97 + Upgrade

Hello guys,

I'm still very happy with my N95 8Gb - the happiest I've been with a phone especially well over a year since I got it. I'm content to keep hold of it until the Nokia N97 is released.

Vodafone, however, are telling me I can upgrade next month. I plan to move down to a lower tariff as with my girlfriend going travelling I'll have less need for 700 minutes. If I do this, will this jeorpodise my chances of getting a reasonably priced upgrade to an N97 when its released?

Or is it simply the case that as always I'll get a better deal starting a new contract anyway?

Is there any sign of a proper release date for the N97 yet?

Thanks!

IIRC, they look at your monthly spend over ~6 months when deciding what level of discount to give you. You'll always have to go through to retentions or swap operator if you want a good deal though.

If you've got no loyalty to Vodafone then I'd suggest lowering your tariff and swapping operators once the phone is out.

I believe the release date is still scheduled for Q2 (April - June) but you never know how long it'll take for individual operators to release it.

Wow looks a lovely phone.

But WHY oh WHY is there no FM transmitter? Its the best feature of any phone I've ever seen and I can't understand why all phones and ipods don't have them inbuilt.

well its going to be a while before any of the uk networks have the n97 - what tarriff are you looking to move down to? if its below £30 then you will be considered as a mid-low value user and the chances of getting the handset for free or a decent price will be nil. the n97 will be extremely exspensive and depending on when your upgrade date is will also have an impact on how much the agent has to spend.

if you are happy with your current handset - i would look at a sim only deal - this would give you increased allowance at a reduced rate but you would not get a new handset. this would also mean you are not in contract so when the n97 is released you would be free to upgrade with them (if you could get a decent price - which to be honest you wouldnt on a sim only deal) or cancel and take out a new contract more than likely giving you the phone for free.

no one has a firm date for the n97 yet - i was speaking to our device strategy manager and its going to be a while (late q2)

I'm currently on a 45 quid tariff. It works well for me now but I wont be making 700 minutes of voice calls a month once the GF is travelling (As 700 minutes of inbound roaming calls will cost her a fortune) so I want to move down to about 300-400 minutes a month thereabouts, but not if its going to kill my chances of a good N97 deal. I certainly dont mind coming back up to 45 quid a month to get an N97 at a reasonable price.

Is your contract due to end?

Could be worth getting an O2 simplicty sim card, then when the N97 comes out get a new contract. I doubt it will be hard to get it for free.

I think there is an FM transmitter, actually. Can't see it anywhere on the Nokia site, but remember it in the Nokia World keynote and a google search comes up with lots of people who have it in their notes. Did they quietly drop it?

The UK release date for the N97 is March 31st. i can upgrade in 2 weeks but i'm considering waiting the 2 months and getting the N97 as the N96 doesn't feel much of an upgrade from an N95

You sure about that?? The official date is in Q2 - lets hope you are right though... Im getting the 5800 next week, doesn't look too bad for £250

Releas date confirmed as 31st March (for SIM free) - story here and others via the wonder of Google......
Thanks, but is there a decent source for this? Looks like it's purely based on a retailer speculating a date. If I were a random phone retailer, I'd want to be the first to put a date on it, and make it soon, so that I could get lots of preorders. Then I could just delay and delay till it's actually released, while retaining many of the preorders. Oh, and lap up the general publicity.

Is this radically different from the N96? Can't understand how people get on with these cumbersome pieces of dump when there are far better mobiles OS's on the market.

lol perhaps you should read about it before jumping to such misguided speculation.

I'm so tempted to not bother with my early upgrade now after seeing this, wow - it looks like an amazing phone.

Knowing my luck T-mob wont have it though!

I agree with you, but Orange!

Not due for renewal until May so if it comes out for them around/before then I think I know what I will be getting!

Sorry about above post - posted after i'd got in from the pub after more than several jars :( Not like me to do that either.

I think it's the mental scars left by the N80 I had showing through.
