Non-manufacturer HDD diagnostic tools

Are there any recommended non-manufacturer specific HDD diagnostic/testing tools?

I'm having myriad problems with a new Seagate SATA drive. However, trying to run the SeaTools tests on (any) of my drives just causes everything to freeze and I'm forced to restart manually.
I'm not convinced that it is a problem with the drive though. I have Everest Home Edition running, and the SMART information it gives is all OK.
Googling variations on "seatools freezes" makes me hope that it might be some other incompatability issue on my system causing the problem with Seatools, rather than a borked HDD.

Anyway, for now, are there are good generic HDD tools that I can try instead?

I've ended up running Spinrite on all my drives overnight and today. Just the Level 1 pass, but so far I've not seen any problems.

Takes a damn long time though on ~900GB total of drives.
