There is a limit on the amount I can withdraw using a cash machine.

If its a significant amount you may need to advise them up front - otherwise they will impose whatever the branch daily cap is.

They wont for that sort of sum, i assume you had to provide a pin though?

Under a certain ceiling, generally set centrally, ID isn't taken as PIN/Signature in front of the cashier is normally fine.
