Hello all.
My name's Dave, Im new here, and fairly new to PCs full stop.
Ive decided that I'm gonna take a stab at building my first PC.
Now I'm quite confident in the actual building of the thing (putting it together, modding and so on)
but I'm pretty sure I need a wee bit of advice with regards to what Im actually building with.
Ive gurrently got a system given to me (very kindly) by my fiances dad about 18 months ago, which comprises of an old ASUS Intel mobo (unsure of Serial), packing a celleron D that only accepts SDDR RAM. It also has a Tagan 480w PSU, a 120gb IDE HDD (for program files), a DVD writer, and a hand full of 80mm Enermax fans. I also have a 320gb SATA HDD thats currently in an External caddy.
I will be taking the DVD drive and the HDDs forward to the new build.
I WAS also going to take the Tagan 480w forward to the new build as its the newest part of the system, but some guys on OC Forums told me that Tagan were a load of crap and I should probably invest in a new one. What do you guys reckon to this???

So after much advice seeking, and generally only being told to spend more money (which wont be available- Budget is dead set at £350/£400 at a push if I do the dishes all year) I've taken suggestions, and put my own input in there and come up with the following system.
First however, the system is intended for heavy photoshop abuse (large images, up to 20 layer projects), some work in adobe premiere, some potential work in cubase, some oldskool CS.S, and other media PC general functions with the view to a VERY mild OC in the future.
I cant post links or images so PLEASE take the time to look at these for me;

-AMD athlon 2 X4 620
-ASUS M4A 785D-M PRO
-550w Antec Basiq Plus PSU (modular)
-4gb (2x2gb) Corsair TwinX DDR2 XMS2, PC2-8500 (5-6-6-18)
-Xigmatek Red Scorpion S1 283 CPU Cooler
-Antec 300
-Asaka 120mm AK-174 CB (2 of- The case comes with 2 antec fans installed)

£347.13 from 'somewhere' for all the above (No delivery cost on there- I'll be collecting in person)

Let me know what you think.
If you have an alternative basket to show me, TRY to keep it to £350.
And also, IS it really neccessary to renew my PSU as that £35 could get me a fan controller in there to boot!!!!!

Thanks in advance all,
From your Noo-est Noob

Hi and welcome

Put this spec together for you, similar to above but uses new DDR3 (theres not much price difference) and included new HDD as this will be major weak point, trying to use old one, the case/psu combo is very good. You could carry the optical drive across but I included one so everything would be new and shiny :D

AMD Athlon II X4 Quad Core 620 2.60GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £79.99 (£69.56)
Coolermaster Sileo 500 Silent Case - Black (500w Extreme Power Plus PSU) £79.99 (£69.56)
Corsair 4GB (2X2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMV4GX3M2A1333C9) £72.99 (£63.47)
Asus M4A785TD-M Evo AMD 785G (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £67.99 (£59.12)
Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD5001AALS) £42.99 (£37.38)
Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £18.99 (£16.51)
Sub Total : £315.60
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
DPD Next Day Parcel
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £11.75
VAT is being charged at 15% VAT : £49.10

As above

Why will using an old HDD be a problem???
The DVD drive is getting stealthed -Not an issue.

You could stretch to a phenom II

Or nearly an i5...

Both using your existing power supply and drive.

Sorry, I can't upload images from work...

Got one here for you. Will work fine, little bit more than the first one given, but the triple core will run better than the athlon quad (L3 cache, and not many things use 4 cores yet, except synthetic benchmarks)

AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE 2.8GHz - 97.99
Coolermaster Elite 334 Case - No PSU - £32.99
120mm Akasa AKA-SM-191 fan - £5.74
Corsair 4GB 10666C9 (CMV4GX3M2A1333C9) - 72.99
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P AMD 770 (AM3, DDR3) - 69.99
WD Caviar Blue 500GB 16MB Cache (WD5000AAKS) - £36.98
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4350 1024MB DDR2 - £34.99
Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x DVD RW SATA - £18.9
Total including VAT & DElivery: £383.61

Reasons:
CPU: Very nice chip. Bit more expensive than the Athlon II, but the price is justified in output. Base clock is higher than the 620, overclocks very well (spend £20 more for an Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 rev.2) and you should be able to get it to about 3.5Ghz

HDD: Cheaper than the Caviar Black, and not much of a performance hit (very little in it... the Blue series are the mainstream drives)

Case: Cheap and good. You can reuse your PSU, meaning you save money there.

Fan: The case only comes with a rear 120mm. Should really add a front one to get better airflow.

Sorry to 95therifles for stealing some of his ideas here. Just giving an option to get a better CPU.

To be fair, the dude said he has a 320Gb sata HDD, so even if it's a bit slow, it's easy enough to stick a sammy f3 or whatever in later on and copy an image over (saving the 320Gb for redundant backup for instance), so he could save £40 right there and go for that i5 rig (or the amd rig if he wants a nicer case or to save more dosh).

I think I will be going with an AMD set up to be fair lads.

Someone mentioned the Tagan PSU will be fine, so I take it no-one here has had any bad experience with Tagan?

Think I should go for the DDR3 TBF, just invest in a better AM3 mobo now and reap the long term benefits... everything else being interchangable with scope for addition.

In all fairness, for the time being I just need something to get up and running so that I can add to it later (further 4gb RAM, HHDs for RAID arangements all mod cons :D)

Input on Tagan vs Antec PSU folks?

keep ur tagan PSU for now , go with the AMD bundle and then at a later time upgrade ur psu and graphics card

Cheers guys.
The missus likes your latest advice more than I!

What she DOESNT know, is that Im secretly planning on a better mobo with DDR3 instead :D
