afternoon all.

i have a focus tdci and have been wondering for a while, if a diesel has a cat, like a petrol car does.

Nope, diesels don't use Cats.
Having said that, some have particulate filters, which clean up the soot that most diesels tend to spew all over the place. I wouldn't have a clue which diesel has them though.

Yes they do have catalytic converters and they are fairly similar to those found on a petrol engine.
They are called Diesel Oxidation Catalysts or 2-way catalysts, and they often also have particulate traps as well, like Mr Sukebe said.

All new diesel engined cars sold in europe have to have them fitted.

They are used to reduce CO (carbon Monoxide) and HC (Hydrocarbon) emmisions. They either have incorporated into them a particulate filter to filter out the larger size soot and particles or often they ghave a second chamber to include a particulate filter.

Some quick Details here

Older diesels tend not to have them and ones that do, if you remove them you can normally still pass emmision tests without them, plus you get more power as it's less restricted :)

This was found out when I was researching a Powerflow exhaust for D Turbo ;)

Maybe Pre 2000, but now all diesel engines have CATs as Entai has said.

The smoke from Diesels has no effect on the CATs performance, and smoke only occurs at peak boost or on chipped diesels.

Some diesels smoke really badly even when not on full throttle *cough* NickXX's 330d *cough*
