Hi

I’m doing a budget gaming build for my daughters & I was hoping you guys can help me with a few questions....

So I’m thinking Ryzen 3, GTX 1050, 8GB, B350 motherboard, Corsair 450 psu. I can get a win 10 license on my MSDN subscription.

So... where do I spend a bit more? If at all?

1300x ryzen over 1200? or 1050ti over 1050 2GB? Or maybe a Radeon card? Or something else? Not bothered about an SSD I can always add one later.

Oh & does RAM still need to be in pairs? Or has the world moved on?

& are sound cards still a thing? Or is it all on the motherboard?

Sorry if these are really dumb questions!

I can’t really spend too much as there is every chance the kids will use it twice & lose interest & I only want to play Fallout 4 & XCOM2!

Thanks!!

Welcome to the forums :)

As far as i gather the sweet spot for Ryzen 3 is 8gb of ddr4 and a gtx1060 which i have seen 3gb cards going new for around £190 which is only about £30 more than the 1050ti and will at least give them a a fighting chance if they wanna play some good games and also wil last a bit longer.

Sound cards, no they are mainly onboard now, a cheap set of speakers and a set of head / ear phones and your away.

Ryzen uses DDR4 which, like all ram, is going up in price, expect to pay £80+ for 8gb :(

There is places where u can buy cheap second hand ddr4 but you gotta take the chance on the no warrenty and buying from an unknown source which always scares me with them type of places

Thanks! Yeah the RAM is killing me!

Gonna try to see if the budget will stretch to a 1060 but I may have to go with a 2GB 1050 to keep within budget. Depends how much stuff I can find to flog on eBay to fund the build!

Thanks again!

And buy yourself an anti-static wristband! Don't listen to the people who don't use them saying "oh well I never had a anything fail". Static can not only destroy your electronics instantly, it can also just damage the insides of chips reducing their lifetime. Service engineers often don't bother because they don't have to live with the consequences, but you do! Wear a strap!

Yes! Anti Static bands, I totally forgot about those things - I actually have a nice one in the bottom of my laptop bag - Thank You for reminding me!

re: budget - trying to keep it £450 or under, the whole gaming thing was supposed to be a £250 XBox One to start with.....

I need to add a case & PSU to the build, so I'm looking at another £80 - £100. Thank you for the reference kit above - really helpful!

I'm hoping this should work nicely for upgrading modestly, I may try Overclocking or upgrading the CPU and/or upgrading the GPU later on once the wife wants to play some graphic intensive Stealth Horror game (& funds are released)

I was thinking about keeping to the 1050 but spending a bit more on faster RAM to keep my overclocking options open.....I've seen a few reports saying the Ti isn't really much of an upgrade over the 1050 2GB? though I'm sure opinions are divided!

Anyways, thanks again for the responses!

specially when peeling off the coating off a Parvum case or acrylic panel- recall installing my mobo without a wristband and couldn't recall if i grounded everything before hand... damn... lol

Options 1-3 a linked above should do the trick- naturally Ti would be the better choice

worth some searching but dependent on the game you play, Ti can hold a good lead over the 1050 and 4GB does help !

rule of thumb- if youve got your budget- spend your budget to get the most out of your budget :D

sorry, adjusted to include PSU and case- nothing pretty but..

@SinisterPenguin as Exo has pointed out, i3 8th gen is another solid idea- depending on how clued up you are with hardware, intel have had a wake up call from AMD and now the i3 is a FULL fat 4 Core chip with four threads, Not 2 cores and 4 threads as we are use to with that branding and model :)
