I'm thingking of trying linux for the first time on my old spare rig (jetway s755 mobo, athlon64 3200cpu,fx5950 gfx and 1 gig ddr400 ram) and am wondering which version to try am i right in thinking ubuntu is the easiest to start with? also will it auto detect an sata hard drive or will i have to install linux specific drivers for it? (same goes for the above gfx card will that work on linux?)

thnx

Ubuntu would be my choice.

All your kit should be autodetected just fine. nVidia make excellent Linux drivers so if you want, you can install them to get full 3d acceleration. You don't need to worry about this during the install though as they can be installed afterwards.
