i made a noob mistake. i had a 290x running on a pcie riser. the plug from the mb shorted on the board briefly and now the card seems dead. no spinning fans, nothing. have i killed it or is there a way to bring it back, i.e baking??

Baking it isn't likely to help, given the purpose of that is to reflow solder joints. Maybe have a close look to see if any components look visibly burnt or damaged, but unless it's a capacitor you're probably not going to be able to replace it anyway.

nope it's dead. ok guys a good lesson to be learnt here. when tinkering DO NOT rush things. easier said when done but it's no brainer. and it seems i have no brain,DERRRRR

We all have those moments, years ago I ran a cpu without attaching the heatsink, a little puff of smoke and it was gone lol
