Noob needs help on first build!

I have never seen a review of the 500w elite psu, where are they?

Yea, I have never seen a proper review of the 500W elite power either, which in itself doesn't give me confidence in it.

Here is a review of the 460W version from the Coolermaster Elite Power line on hardwaresecrets.com.

Ok not sounding rude or nothing, but a review of a different psu shouldnt lead you to assume all the range are bad.

We both know that the GX650/750w are average at best right? but the GX450w seems ok - http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Cooler-Master-GX-450-W-Power-Supply-Review/1234

And its only a ATI5830 and a more energy efficient/lower wattage Sandybridge build, if it was a GTX470 etc and older i7 then i would be worried.

That is true, but I still wouldn't recommend using a PSU which hasn't been reviewed and found to be OK.

The reviews from the other family members certainly shouldn't be taken as evidence of how the 500W PSU performs, but with the absence of any other evidence then I would personally assume they are of the same level unless other reviews come to light which show it performs better. ie playing it safe

Absolutely, but in that case we have review of all of these units to look at.

I suppose, but the 5830 is still a relatively power hungry card and the OP sounds like he might give overclocking a go.

My position is that you should play it safe with a PSU and spend a bit more on a PSU that you know is good quality, since it is so important. However, that is just my approach and others may see it very differently - especially if they are working to a tight budget.

ok, ordered.. thanks for your help :)

Managed to get everything i needed and only £40 overbudget! Decided to get a better PSU and downgraded my HDD from 1TB to 500gb to pay for it; Also bought a DVI cable.

Being delivered on monday, so i'll more than likely be back then wondering how to put this thing together!

Very good choice for the money.

Can't say about the value items, but the rest ain't bad at all.

Dunno about the case but shouldn't be a problem, and the PSU is good enough for even a mid-range graphics card (5850 and comparable power consumption).

If you come across a bit of money, a HSF upgrade (something like a A50, £25), and if going for big graphics card (GTX 580 / 570 / 6950 / ect...), possibly a case upgrade (if case too small, too hot) and a PSU (650W) upgrade is you go for power hungry cards or more overclock.

You can sell redundant hardware to recoup a bit of money, so shouldn't be too bad. If you have upgrade in mind for later, don't throw away the boxes and goodies :)

For reference, a HD5830 is about equivalent to a single high end laptop graphics card (HD5870M, that sort of thing).

Yeah, ive managed to get what i wanted and can upgrade the value items over time while still being able to play the games i want.. so pretty happy with it!

ok, so the next things i should upgrade is the HSF, case, and PSU? before i bother upgrading the graphics/ram or sticking a SSD drive in there?

Yeah, i always forget about that and throw things out.

Ive been reading a lot about the HD5830 being a big (in size) graphics card? will it actually fit in the case i purchased? :(

ok, everything fit in fine and its built ok. Just waiting for a Windows 7 CD to properly test but when i go into bios, my CPU is idling at 50c? Is that fine or abit high and a misplaced/not properly connected heatsink?

Thats a bit high, not much, only around 10 degrees C, you cant try giving the heatsink a tiny little wiggle to bed it down better, or seeing if the thermal paste "cures" by tomorrow, or add an extra fan to the case.

Having the side panels off can be worse unless you have a desk fan pointing at the insides or a strong breeze in your room? with the side panels in place, the fan fitted to the case will be circulating the air flow or doing its best on it own.

Another thing I remember,

look at the back of the motherboard and check the pushpins have gone completely through the board, and that one hasnt been left half fitted.

k, windows 7 installed but ive noticed a major problem. When i boot up the PC, im getting 3 beeps (everything seems to be working fine). They seem to be 2 normal fast beeps then a high pitch faster beep.

Anyone know what that means?

yes, i was reading around the internet and that the bios temps are usually a lot higher than when on windows. So i started running temp monitors in windows and it seems to be idling at around 37c instead of the 70c in bios.

So now, only got to solve the 3 beep problem.. anyone got any idea's what it is?

MSI P67A-C45 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION ** motherboard

2 beeps (the type of beep you would usually get when you turn it on but 2 of them) followed by 1 high pitched beep (no real delay inbetween either beep).
