Ok cut a long story short i have wired all my rooms up in my house with Cat5e Cable no face plates yet just wires at the points i want them, I have connected 1 up with RJ45 Jacks using this wiring system:
1- White/orange
2- Orange/White
3-White/Green
4-Blue/White
5-White/blue
6-Green/white
7-White/Brown
8-Brown/White

This systems looks to be the same wiring as a shop bought ethernet cable. However when im using mine im only getting 100Mbps but as soon as i plug my pre bought 1 in i get gigabit!
The switch im drawing from is a Netgear Prosafe Gigabit switch GS108.

Can i only draw gigabit from this wire if its face plates at both ends? or should i be able to use it with Rj45's and get gigabit also?

Any help would be great.

Thanks Neil

You should be able to get a Gigabit connection.

I'd guess that you've either got a badly/incorrectly connected plug, or a damaged pair somewhere along the cable.

Buy yourself a cheap cable tester.

I would check you wiring carefully, as usual cat5e has four solid colour & four colour with white marker.
Usually wire faceplates using T568B format, you will definitely need a network tester about £5 or less, & make sure wires are pushed fully home.
Unless you can terminate a RJ45 correctly, then I would use couple of four port face plates, & then individual patch cables to the netgear.

ok guys ill have another play with the crimper and buy a tester but im glad to hear i should be getting gbit threw cat5e as some people say you cant. Phhhew :P

Thanks a lot.. Neil.

If your using a cheap plastic push down tool, treat yourself to a decent metal Push Down Krone Tool only a couple of quid, but you get a perfect connection everytime.

Look on the bay, you can buy complete kit of network tester, krone tool, etc for about a fiver.

Ok just made another for WD Live to switch to access data on Ds210j and green lights at both sides :D. But this is just a temp fix until i order face plates / jacks what ever they are wiring the same on those too ? Cant get that sort of stuff from overclockers can i?
