Noob question

Yes they don't need a sim to operate. Though if your using it for navigation you'll need a data connection if you go off route.

just buy an american pay as you go sim, stick $10-$20 in it and use it for local calls and data.

make sure your phone is unlocked before hand though.

i would talk to someone over there who is more clued up on there best pay as you go deals, or find an american forum and ask on there.

i did this in thailand, think i put £6 in it and it lasted me 2 weeks of calls (international as well as local) as well as data.

if I don't want or need calls or texts as I will be using wifi with whatsapp will my phone just show no signal if i keep my virgin mobile sim in?

I'm getting sygic USA for satnav so the maps are stored locally on phone.

no you will automatically be put on "roaming".

better off with a local sim or no sim.

This would be ideal for emergencies etc...

Plus the internet will not work if I don't buy a mobile data booster...Plus they don't do one for the USA

I was in the states last month. Actually forgot to turn off data roaming. So £20 was already charged to my phone for using 50MB.

I turned off data roaming and just used wifi. Luckily, the town centre of Metropolis has a wifi antenna near by. So I was able to still upload pics and use all my social media apps and whatsapp just as normal. And of course in the hotel.

I did receive a normal SMS tho, so it does connect to the operators in the US. I didn't make or receive any calls. So I was just fine with having wifi.

Just rang T mobile. The woman on chat told me wrong. That booster is for just UK to USA calls:rolleyes:

Think What I'll do is turn of roaming on my phone. Use wifi and be willing to Pay 1.20 per minute in the case of emergencies...
