Looking for a remote set up for VNC control and I'm new to this.

I have a main desktop but I also have a HTPC. I'd liek to remotely control the htpc (via vnc?) but also connect to my dad's pc over the internet.

Looked at suggestions of hamachi/logmeinfree/ultravnc but they all seem to do pretty much the same thing.

Do I take it that when I am installing the progs that my main PC will be the server and the others the clients

Thanks and sorry for really noob questions.

Server = computer to be controlled. Start the VNC Server program on this machine(s).

Client = controller computer. Start this on the machine(s) you'll be using to control the others.

As long as the firewall and router settings allow it, you should be able to connect over the internet by just typing your dad's IP address into the VNC Viewer connection window. Make sure you include the port, and password protect it!

Since the VNC experts will probably pop in here...

I want to only share a single window. I believe UltraVNC can do this, but I can't find a reference to it on the webiste.

Can anyone confirm this and if it does not, does anyone know of an application (preferably free) that does?

OK, got tightvnc up and running; trouble is though is that it'll not connect to the remote computer if I type in the IP address of the server in the viewer; however it will connect if I put it in listening mode and initiate the connection from the server side.... wierd(!) any ideas on settings that I may have missed?

A firewall allowing an established connection but not a new one?

is the server on a LAN or a WAN?

Maybe windows firewall (pile of tosh) getting in the way

IIRC windows firewall is on on both machines; both machines are on my LAN, my main is wired, my htpc is wireless though I don't think that should make any difference.

My router is Speedtouch 585v6 with the firewall active to the internet so that shouldn't have any affect on this.

If you do have Windows Firewall enabled you will need to allow VNC through the firewall.

I do not know what ports Tight VNC uses as I use Real VNC (Free Edition) and it should tell you the ports it uses.

Allow these ports through the individual computer software firewalls. Real VNC uses port 5900 (by default), Tight VNC may be different.
