Many thanks my "no R-type" co-named forum goer. I shall bare this in mind.

However... Is this advice specific to the building of a wood cabinet or is it more general than that. It seems to me that step 1 could be highly applicable to many applications. ;)

Oh yeh. Its got tonnes of uses. It really applies to all areas of construction, whether thats buildings or relationships or whatever may tickle your construction fancy. It is not advisable for eating. So as you can see its really a area specific piece of advise and using it out of context could be detrimental to your health.

Quick mention something to make it relevant.

I saw a Mame cabinet once. It was brown~ish.

This is very tempting actually. Might give me something to do over the summer.

Anyone have a good idea of how much this will eventually cost? I assume the wood would be the most expensive part. A cheap second PC can be picked yup for pounds now-a-days.

Nah wood is the cheapest bit.
An 8 foot by 4 foot sheet of 3/4 inch MDF is about £12.
The expensive parts are the keyboard emulator, buttons and sticks.
Infact the most expensive part would be having custom made decals for it.

I reckon you could build one for under £75 depending on what you have lying around.
