Noob Xbox arcade questions

How easy is it to change the dvd drive for a quiter one?

You can't the DVD has firmware is coded as part of the copy protection, you can change it for a different xbox drive and modify the firmware with a new code but there are all fairly similarly noisy and you wouldn't want to watch a DVD through it!

A premium with a 60GB will be fine, some good deals around at the moment. That should be enough to install your top 8 games with a little extra space and it doesn't cost all that much more than an Arcade ... unless you picked up a bargain!

if the DVD drive is too loud and you have a HDD on your 360 you can now copy the games to the HDD from the DVD and run them from that, making for a quiet gaming experience :)

This is all on the new Dashboard btw

You still need the original in the drive to play?

Yep. I installed a few games and found that there was absolutely no difference. Still loud, same loading times, same everything other than you have to wait for 20 minutes to install it and waste disk space.

The cooling fans on your 360 must be bloody loud.
I have 6 games installed on mine and my PS3 makes more noise now.
Also none of the games took 20 minutes to install it was more like 10 minutes.

The disc gets checked to make sure you own the game, everytime you want to play. Once that's verified the game will then be loaded from the hard-drive (assuming you've already installed it there). The disc in the DVD drive does not get accessed after that so it will be quieter than without hard-drive installs :)

I've not found any difference with laoding times but the CD drive is certainly quieter, I now know which games are installed on my hdd and which are not due to the noise my 360 kicks out.

Great feature.

There is an improvement in game performance, both in loading times and smoothness of running. There is proof of this, look for loading times in google.

Still loud? Hows that possible when the dvd drive isnt spinning, which is the main cause of the noise.

20 minutes? more like 10 or 15 at the very very most.

for the first year i think it is yeah, but after that it will cost. MS do offer a free 3-year warranty on the RROD error though. If it did go you could always claim its red ringed and send it back....or you could pay for the extended warranty?
