Noobish question - CPU voltage setting

A mate of mine (yeah right I hear you say!) has what is the difference between letting the CPU voltage at AUTO versus manual adjustment? Sounds like a really simple question but if AUTO implies it automatically supplies the required voltage (btw, he's overclocked his E6600 to 2.93 currently and is looking to press on), then it begs the question as to why manual option is required.

Is manual for more 'fine tuning'?

Does auto only send enough volts to the cpu at its stock rated speed?

Confused!

Simpathetic reply required to Noob overclocker. Thanks all ;)

Auto often sets the voltages higher than is needed.

If using Auto you really need to keep an eye on the voltages in Windows.

But set them manually tbh.

Thanks for that Cob. You're a star, mate :)

Can you expand on your comment:

''If using Auto you really need to keep an eye on the voltages in Windows''

Cheers mate ;)

Speedfan and Everest will list the current voltages (vcore and vdimm) when in Windows. Use them to ensure that Auto isn't trying to push 1.6v through your CPU.
