Hello !!

I am wanting to upgrade my car (Currently a 1.2 Renault Clio) but I am wanting something with a bit more oomph while still being able to fit snugly into the tiny car parking space at work.

So I have decided to stick with the Clio, but I was wondering what would be better, getting a 1.4 16V or a 1.6 8V (if such a thing exists).

I don't really want to drive around fast, but I do want to accelerate fast :)

Any suggestions ?

what year is your car or what year would you be looking to buy? Budget ?
Safe to say the 1.6 would be a better bet if you wanted more speed but as above, you could probably do better if you moved away from a clio

Focus ST170?

I like Clios :)
Cheap to run, solidly built.
And as I said, I have a tiny parking space, I quite littererally could not go for anything bigger.

Well, I'm looking for a 2005 model, but I need to be secure in the fact that if I upgrade, there will be a fairly noticable difference in power. And I am worried that going from a 2002 1.2 to a 2005 1.4 would not be worth the hassle.

well the 1.6 2005 models are 111bhp coming from 75bhp in the 1.2 so it will be an upgrade but i can't see it being worth it if you want to oopmh

Sure.
My 1.2 feels well chunky and solid... I dunno about anyone elses though :)

A Clio might feel chunky if you were used to driving, say, a Fisher Price My First Car. I had the misfortune of driving my fiancées Clio for a few months last year - woefully underpowered, unreliable and just not a nice place to be!

Well the wife went from a 1.2 8v Grande on an X reg to a 2004 1.4 16v Dynamique, and it is so much better that the other clio. she prefers everything on the new one over the older one.

My missus upgraded from a 99 1.2 with 60bhp to an 04 1.4 with 98bhp. Bearing in mind that it only weighs 980kg, it just about manages 100bhp/tonne, so is quite peppy if you're willing to rev it a bit. Not sure if the 1.6 would be much quicker as the extra power is offset by the extra weight.

Also consider that if you get the Dynamique, as SWMBO's is, in either 1.4 or 1.6 guise, you get uprated suspension and quicker steering, which actually makes it quite a lot of fun to chuck about.

Build quality is appalling though, so don't expect much in that deparment.
