hey all, stupid noob question but here goes.

what should my pci express bus speed be running at, after overclocking my opteron from 1.8 to 2.6 will it have changed the bus speed.

so far its at 2500mhz, the Pci Express bus speed taht is,

is that normal?

the board is an Asus A8N SLI Deluxe

The PCI-Express bus speed is 100 Mhz or very close to, if it was running at 2500 Mhz your graphics card would have blown up long ago :p

My guess is you are actually referring to the Hyper Transport link in which case 2500 Mhz is a rather substantial overclock though I'm not too sure how you would arrive at that figure. If your Hyper-Transport multiplier is still set to 5x you need to lower it to 3x or 4x as many boards get unstable above 2000 Mhz HT (and you get no performance hit from underclocking it). It is calculated by the FSB x the HT multiplier, so default is 200 FSB x 5 (the HT multiplier).

I could be wrong about what your referring to so if you can take a screenshot of where you are getting that information it would be helpful :)

thats the thing im on about, i mean it could be Ntune screwing up but i may as well check

erm, well thats not very releiving, shall i run and call *** firebrigade in advance or is something going wrong elsewhere.

lol?

help anyone  :(

It is fine, don't worry about it, if you find the appropriate entry in the BIOS it will show the usual 100 Mhz PCI Express bus frequency.

It doesn't really make a difference to performance (unless it is overclocked in which case instability may result), just make sure you keep it under 2000 Mhz effective. It is also the motherboard you overclock more than the CPU and it really is entirely unnecessary to do so.

I dunno what multiplier you are using atm, I'm guessing 9 x 288 FSB, with a divider on the mem? If so I'd just stick with an HT multiplier of 3 which results in a healthy 1728 HT. If it was 4x you'd have a 2304 HT which is not healthy :p

lol, cheers man, thats helped a lot and cleared stuff up for me,

and yes you were right, 9x288 with a mem divider.

i love this chip so much, dont wana conroe, its so cool and still quick enough for most things.

Np :) I'm also running an Opty and don't see a need to upgrade but it is a lot hotter than that one (35ish idle, 41ish load @ 1.35 volt) :p

is the 859 the evo33 or something else?

i mean i have a vapochill micro, which isnt the best of coolers, waht version opty is it, i thought all the socket 939's were the same, unless yours is a 940?

also, you might wana try repasting, helped my mate drop his laod from 45C to 40C

Dual core optys are a different revision to the single core optys and different weeks/batches and the chip itself (and contact between core and IHS) can make a big diff. The 859 is a standard copper cooler but it is plenty decent enough.

so which one you got then :P

i know dual cores are different to singles but i thoght that there was only one core type for the 939's, venice isnt it?

Single core, Opteron 150 (2.4 Ghz), there are same cores as the Athlon 64s but no 512KB ones so San Diego for single and Toledo for dual (E4 & E6 respectively).
