Only problem I can see is the US reaction.

Best thing they could do is park a couple boomers off the coast, surface them once so the news cameras can get a shot, then submerge them again. Once a week bring them up for a lookie-loo, then make them disappear again.

Keep reminding the NK gov't that there's enough nukeage within seconds of thier coasts to vaporise the country and that there's nothing they can do about it.

I do believe that's what a nuclear deterrant is all about, isn't it? The threat that it's there....

[EDIT] Additionally park a couple Aegis cruisers equipped with double-boosted SM-2's in the vertical launchers. That way if there is a launch, it won't get very far.....

The trouble is South Korea. I don't for a minute think any countries like America or Japan are in danger, but South Korea is more or less being held hostage. If NK is attacked they could in theory nuke SK, I don't think theres anything that could be done to stop a short range nuking like that.

So no-one can attack NK without risking SK... which would be a PR armageddon for any government that supported it.

That said NK can't attack anyone either because if they did they'd be vapourised.

All in all I can't see theres anything too bad about this stalemate, it's certainly worrying but the world held together through the cold war... Maybe we just have to wait for the North Koreans to revolt.

Yeah, hence my edit. Prevent even a short range launch getting much more than a few miles from the launch pad before interception.

Mind you, you'd have to have some pretty alert EW's on those ships to differentiate between valid targets and non-valid ones.....

I want to know if China will stop sitting on the fence. It makes China look particularly stupid as they appeared to enjoy the position where they were regarded as the ones with influence over NK.

Japs won't be happy! Will they dump their position whereby they only spend money on defence as opposed to offence? I think there will be an arms race, I expect to see the US anti-missile defence umbrella to be ramped up.

I'm in Southern China at the moment and I just want China to shut up and stay out of it. The city in which I live is one of the most powerful economic centres of the country bordering Hong Kong and, as such, is a big target for any loopy NK 'omgz0or kill them!' overreactions.

I don't think they're quite stupid enough to even look at China in the wrong way, though. Especially since China provide them with so much and they'd kick their Korean asses.

We'll see.

Just hearing that Bush is going to address the nation any time now - that's after midnight here.....sounds ominous :(

EDIT: Hoping this is just a rumour...

I suppose I should get ready for the all the Chinese asking me if I'm American.

Wo de mama! Bu shi! Wo shi ying guo ren. YING GUO!

Ahhh, hen hao. Wo xi huan ying guo, dan bu xi huan mei guo! :p

I can gurantee that conversation will happen to me at least 20 times in the next 2 weeks.

And another country totally ignores the UN.

The question will the UN let them get away with it?

lets face it tho the UN is a toothless old dog and this will prove it :(

Early reports suggest this test was a bit of a dud. Sounds like it was a pretty crude device of around 550 tons. Still do plenty of damage tho, and it was nuclear. Apparently the Whitehouse has already ruled out a military response.

AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER JOHN HOWARD
Australia will "advocate a UN Security Council regime against [North Korea] which includes targeted financial and travel sanctions, other trade restrictions and/or aviation restrictions".

Wow....that'll show 'em
