Northern Lights tonight 25/3

I saw them properly for the first time a couple of weeks ago a little bit north of where you are. Space weather was quiet so it was relatively benign, but I’d love to be there now.

would still like to understand how to stand best method of shooting that with a dslr ... Don't have a tripod for oldish smartphone, either.
This is what I tried actually. Bumping up the iso. 4 seconds. Max aperture.

It looked worse than the phone.
I couldn't get rid of the noise. Or it was too dark (all over).

Someone there had 8k worth of canon mirrorless kit. And he said (and I had read) that with my relatively cheap kit, aps-c and 3.5 max aperture you struggle to get anything. And it wasn't a hyper intense show.

My phone did much better with its processing

I have an APS-C Fuji. Tripod, ISO 6400 ish, aperture wide open, manual focus to infinity, and experiment with shutter speeds. Any more than about 3 seconds and you’ll start to get star trails. I used both a 12mm f/2 and a 23mm f/1.4.

My wife’s iPhone 15 got some arguably nicer pics for viewing on the typical devices but weren’t suitable for printing at A4 or larger.

It's supposedly passed Stafford many a time, but I have never seen it with the naked eye.

I think the only way you can see it is by taking a long expose photo, then the camera will capture it. Just not the naked eye. The bright and colourful pictures that you see on BBC's web site every now and then will be long exposure photos.

Peaked with a purple warning before dark yesterday, cloud was terrible in Wales but all activity fizzled out and it came to nothing.

Just bugger right off!! I saw some cracking pictures of the Aurora and the Perseids yesterday. What was it like here? Overcast and low cloudbase as bloody usual. Twenty five years I have lived in NE Scotland and never seen a Aurora. I am just waiting for my father back home in deepest Cornwall to send me his latest pics because he always like to take the mick. Bugger he is!!

Yeah, think it was cloudy here in NE England too. I needed the sleep anyway after not really sleeping Sunday night.

Nothing in the sky last night too far south I think. I have seen the Perseids though many years ago the individual meteors are quite a sight but if you're expecting a fireworks display you're gong to be disappointed
