Norton asking to update definitions every restart

Hi. I've recently started having this problem with Norton. Everytime I fire up my PC it tells me that my definitions as they are out of date. I update and then... oops everythings all up to date. I have reinstalled it and actually reinstalled vista and it still keeps doing it everytime I restart the PC. Is there a reason for this?

Also since reinstalling VISTA my boot up times have been a lot slower. What might take 25 seconds now takes 40. I don't know why this is either..

Will give avast a go.

The other thing is my hard drive seems to never shut up either. I wonder perhaps because i'm just after doing a vista install.

norton 2008. I'm giving avast a whirl at the moment. It's found a couple of things already that Norton missed. and I mopped up with lavasoft :p

Live update is now happy. Hard drive isn't seeking so much now too when idle. One thing is my cpu pattern when idle. It seems to have some regular process which goes to 50-70% of CPU every 5-10 seconds on what looks to be a cycle (WHEN IDLE)

Is this part of vista? Based on processes on time in question it looks to be something called SearchIndexer.exe

BTW I only just installed vista 2 hours ago if that matter

apparently it indexes all files on a system. Given I've just installed about 15-20 programs back onto my PC can I take this as being normal behaviour? How long can I expect it to persist? I guess it stops after everything is indexed.

To be honest the way windows is running I'm thinking of wiping the hard drive using a program in case there are any remaining files from my previous vista install - although I formated using the vista cd

Something definitely isn't right with all the slow loading times and issues

Can anyone recommend a program?

I don't think it's just Norton. Even before I installed norton the system was running slower than usual. I'd feel happer just wiping the drive TBH

Ok I will try all of these now thanks. They wouldn't explain why my PC is now so slow booting and actually loading up to even typing my windows password?

Ok i removed all the startup crap and I did seem to load in a bit quicker. I have some stuff like coretemp and ATI CCC so its never going to be the quickest vista load in. Also have applied blackviper safe settings.

Bit annoyed at loss of CD drive. If I update drivers it says up to date but in manage computer it says they are corrupt...

Removed norton remover and... it is booting up slightly quicker

Update: Boot in time - a lot quicker now. not as quick as I would like but i have high expectations :)

Couple of things:
1) I have a 250Gb HDD with OS and software, all over stuff in external. Is this ok to leave unpartitioned?
2) Coretemp (allowed in startup) no longer appears when PC starts, but when I try to put it on manually it says already running..
3) I want my DVD drive back lol
4) Search indexer now seems to have stopped - good thing?

Note sure what you mean here.

I don't use Coretemp, is it just one process?

Follow my previous post.

Yes - for a few days it will 'thrash' your hard drive so searches are quicker. After this period, it is very minimal.

+1

:D

1) Ignore me
2) FIXED: Just reset it for next reboot
3) FIXED: removed itunes and then deleted drivers and now windows installed the drivers. DVD Drive still has driver corrupt after fix. Guess I'll just do the old registry delete and have to reinstall all dvd software like itunes and photoshop (for some reason)
4) Search indexer now seems to have gone from a 60-80% process to a 2-3% process after all the changes I have recently made (I'm not complaining)

Also what is the topline process here?

To update, I believe itunes to be the source of my DVD driver disappearing. Have found reports of other people having this. Well its working now. I blame apple :p

Just an update. System still bit temperamental. When I originally installed I was installing programs while vista premium installed itself and such. Just gonna reformat and start from scratch and pray.

system was running a lot faster on previous install last week and i can only assume I must have fouled it up installing software or update. So instead this time I'm going to:
1) Reflash bios (just in case)
2) Reformat using vista DVD
3) Install home basic
4) Install SP1
5) Install premium upgrade
6) Install mobo chipset + graphics card drivers
...
Finally install my programs last this time

Ok so I did a clean install - only program I have installed other than vista is avast.

Well I think I have solved this issue,

I went for a fresh install and as opposed to just clicking format on the vista CD I also clicked delete (I'm a tool) and it freed up the remaining space on the drive. I then installed and I have had no BSOD during vista loading bars, no mysterious disappearing icons. And vista is running nice and quick (for vista).

Only got basic installed for now but I'll put premium on tomorrow. All looking good.

Perhaps clashing vista files if it didn't totally remove them dunno. All's well now anyway I hope. As long as premium upgrade and service pack don't screw me over lol
