Norton asking to update definitions every restart

*Norton. The most successful Virus on the Interwebz* :D

Do as Richdog says He is Rich & a Dog.
I'd use Avast though as it is Free I am Poor & it has served me & every system I have put it on Brilliantly over the last 18 months or so.

To be honest the way windows is running I'm thinking of wiping the hard drive using a program in case there are any remaining files from my previous vista install - although I formated using the vista cd

Something definitely isn't right with all the slow loading times and issues

Can anyone recommend a program?

There is a prog out there to Properly uninstall all the left over Norton files, Google it & Use it ;)

That's how bad it is :p

I don't think it's just Norton. Even before I installed norton the system was running slower than usual. I'd feel happer just wiping the drive TBH

Formatting with the Vista CD will erase all files on the hard drive (or partition).

What could be happening, is that there is too much junk loading at startup, use Start > Run > 'msconfig' (without the quotes), and click on the "Startup" tab. Uncheck stuff that doesn't need to run at startup, such as java and quicktime services.

I also recommend going to Start > Run > 'services.msc' (again, without the quotes) and use Blackviper's Guide, use the 'safe' configuration.

EDIT: And use this: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=norton+removal+tool&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

Ok I will try all of these now thanks. They wouldn't explain why my PC is now so slow booting and actually loading up to even typing my windows password?

Its a possibility, yes. But this sort of behaviour is more known to Norton AV Products. When I moved over to AVG from Norton, my boot times were much better.

Then, on my new computer, I went to Avast! which is even better, shutting stuff down, again, even better.

Ok i removed all the startup crap and I did seem to load in a bit quicker. I have some stuff like coretemp and ATI CCC so its never going to be the quickest vista load in. Also have applied blackviper safe settings.

Bit annoyed at loss of CD drive. If I update drivers it says up to date but in manage computer it says they are corrupt...

Removed norton remover and... it is booting up slightly quicker

Update: Boot in time - a lot quicker now. not as quick as I would like but i have high expectations :)

Couple of things:
1) I have a 250Gb HDD with OS and software, all over stuff in external. Is this ok to leave unpartitioned?
2) Coretemp (allowed in startup) no longer appears when PC starts, but when I try to put it on manually it says already running..
3) I want my DVD drive back lol
4) Search indexer now seems to have stopped - good thing?

Dunno who posted that originally but I thought it was appropriate.

;)

Note sure what you mean here.

I don't use Coretemp, is it just one process?

Follow my previous post.

Yes - for a few days it will 'thrash' your hard drive so searches are quicker. After this period, it is very minimal.

Avast! is also very good, probably the best all-round freebie. :)

+1

:D

:D

1) Ignore me
2) FIXED: Just reset it for next reboot
3) FIXED: removed itunes and then deleted drivers and now windows installed the drivers. DVD Drive still has driver corrupt after fix. Guess I'll just do the old registry delete and have to reinstall all dvd software like itunes and photoshop (for some reason)
4) Search indexer now seems to have gone from a 60-80% process to a 2-3% process after all the changes I have recently made (I'm not complaining)

Also what is the topline process here?

It is the 'System Idle Process' - explanation here.

They used to be 'great', particularly for 95 and 98. Even now, their rescue disk can be useful.

But as far as resource hogging, they are second only to AOL.

I think the only Norton Product I would use now is Norton Ghost, but I have replaced with Acronis True Image as it is just so good.

Symantec Backup Exec is also good. They're probably the only two that I'd use.

AOL is just pure bloat, and people wonder why their PCs are so slow, again, they used to 'good' but their software followed the same path as Norton, loading more and more rubbish into their software.

To update, I believe itunes to be the source of my DVD driver disappearing. Have found reports of other people having this. Well its working now. I blame apple :p
