Hi there,

I have Norton Internet Security and my subscription just expired.

It now seems to be not working at all, I had thought it would still work but just not take updates anymore? Is there anyway to get it to be active again (albeit outdated)?

If not can anyone recommend alternative virus / malware / firewall protection to use? Preferably a free one :P, are the Microsoft Windows ones any good? (although I can't see the windows anti-virus but thought one was released not too long ago :S).

Thanks,

Use the Norton Removal Tool (find it on Google search) to remove all traces of that awful AV, then buy NOD32 or if you want one for free, the MS Security Essentials AV. Your system will be quicker without Norton, it really is a hog.

What was the last version you used? NIS 2009/2010 are certainly not hogs...

Anyway, go with the MSSE.

Or Kaspersky as another paid for alternative :).

Thanks, for the advice guys at the moment I have installed the windows one.

I will still be checking here though for in case I decide to buy a bought one (I tend to buy one with a new computer but when its a bit older tend not to worry so much :)).

Norton was annoying though all those reminders you can't stop, and I had not expected it to stop working, it did not use to, though subscription expiring would only mean no updates which would be fine for a while. Some protection is better than none :).
