Norton needs Renewing

Yes, there's one here,

and no, Norton '11:
- is not 'pants'
- is not bloatware
- does not 'completely take over your pc' as some as saying?

+1 has anyone read the latest reviews on Norton ?

I used to hate it with a passion but since 2010 it is a very good product.

I switched to Norton from Eset smart security and norton found a couple of

trojans that eset had let in.

Eset's detection rate has dropped according to the reviews.

I have not noticed any real system slow down compared to Eset.

I tried Kaspersky which did appear to slow down my pc a lot more than Norton

or Eset.

I'm sticking with Norton for now, it's doing a fantastic job so far for me.

I missed this earlier. Norton subscribers can always update to the latest version for free during their subscription period, so that shouldn't be a problem at all. The subscription isn't tied down to any particular version.

Cool.

For all those saying it's bloatware I suggest you use a new version of Norton. I was suprised at first how invisible it is. My mums expertise when it comes to PCs is opening Firefox and sending emails via Outlook so she needs a AV/Firewall that is simple and doesn't confuse her.

People want light user friendly applications not bloatware like what Norton offer, the cost of Norton doesn't even come close to what the product is worth. It's rubbish. You must be the only one to say it's great.

What evidence are you using to say it's bloated? How are you even qualifying bloatedness here? Memory usage? MSE uses more than three times as much memory as Norton both idle and peak. Benchmarks show Norton as being no more bloated or system intensive than other anti virus solutions and in most cases lighter than average.

Norton was completely rewritten from scratch back in 2009 and it's been getting better each year since. It's developed a good reputation on places like Wilders Security Forums.

Kasperskey is very good BUT it can be a bit of a system hog. It frequently updates and has protected our 4 machines for the last 3 - 4 years without letting anything slip through.

It will make booting up a bit slower as it does a quick scan on startup, but I will quite happily sacrifice a minute or two on the infrequent times I reboot the machines.

Norton 360 is a fantastic product, admit Symantec didn't do themselves favours years ago with the problems it had but as a product now it's absoloutely fantastic.

I sell bucket loads of it at work, I wasn't going to bother with it until I got a free copy of the full edition and I think it's superb, even installed on my netbook it doesn't hog the system or even slow it down through scans/updates.

If i dont get a free copy again next year I'll almost definitely buy it.

I don't have any problems with the 360, but I do think its a bit overkill on the security front.
The Norton AV IMO is enough and is even lower on resources.

+1 for NIS2011, It bears no comparison with the earlier versions, as stated the upgrades to the latest version are free and it is easy to configure...

I get PCs in with the older version of Norton, i.e. 360 v1 and it makes a big difference upgrading it to the latest (v4 I think now?). I wouldn't use it myself, but it is a lot quicker than it used to be.

McAfee has gone the other way and is as slow as Norton used to be.

People seem to want all kinds of **** on their computers. I don't get it either, but it's easier to just let them be than to lose hair attempting to set them straight. I've found Kaspersky does a decent job of keeping the girlfriends laptop running despite her best efforts, so I'd recommend that.

I've also seen a lot of buggered laptops running Norton, but then they all have windows updates disabled and are using the same version of Norton that came on the CD. It's probably not entirely fair to blame the antivirus.

To be fair Norton is not the product it was 5 years ago. Like a lot of people I have used MSE since its launch (prior to that Kaspersky) as it’s decent for a free AV and like most kept away from Norton due to my memories of terribly bloated past releases.

However prompted by MSE’s rather poor showing in some recent AV tests such as av-test.org and Norton generally coming out around top of the pack I decided to try the NIS2012 beta (after backing up all data of course)

I have been using it for a few days and so far it’s been an excellent product. If we want to talk bloat I think we really need to point the finger at MSE. On my PC MSE used around 60-70MB across both processes whereas NIS2012 is currently running two processes in task manager at around 8MB and 5MB respectively. And that's for a whole IS suite.
To be totally transparent I’ll also count the (optional) Norton Chrome plug in too that is currently running at about 20MB which is less than the AdBlock Plus extension so I can hardly whinge.

Really nice UI and from what I have seen from tests excellent protection. That combined with the very low resource usage especially compared with MSE is making me seriously consider changing my PC’s over to Norton.

As always though YMMV and the user is the weakest link in the chain and all that but I think we need to move past Norton=bloat because it clearly isn’t the case.

NOD32 is using about 60MB at the moment, but the amount doesn't both me too much, its more of the cpu cycles and hard disk usage.

avast or mse in the reviews ive read havent got good detection rates at all , where ive used norton the last 10 months and has been very good ..no slow down off computer what ive seen...it used to be a crap program but not any more ....thyve got it spot on now !!! .....in my view anyway lol

i certainly woudnt go to avast or mse instead off norton ..... id keep norton ...mse and avast dont have that good detection rates on reports ive seen .......theyre ok for free
