If, and I really hope this is one of those cases where it is not, but if this is actually true how exactly can this happen? She is a Norwegian citizen, their government has a duty to protect her from illegal incarceration abroad. This is, by any standards of international law and human rights treaties an illegal incarceration and as such these must, in a case like this override any sovereign laws.

Again let me stress that I hope someone will come on here with the other side of the story or something that proves this is completely fabricated but if that's not the case then I hope the Norwegian government are looking at any and all options to rescue their citizen, if a country cannot protect their own people then what respect does it deserve? I hope a quiet diplomatic word would be enough to bring some sense to this situation but if that fails then escalation to condemnation in the UN, sanctions or the use of military special forces to rescue her would not be over the top in my opinion.

That's disgusting, how can a government turn it's back on one of it's citizens being falsely imprisoned and abused like this by another nation?

They need to take a tip from how the Roman Empire used to treat abuses of its citizens by other nations.

Yes, it is because you are judging them based upon a framework that comes from "our" culture. In the past 20 years, we've seen the cultures you do not see as "backwards" propagate terror and violence across the globe, sell billions of arms to regimes who are just plain evil, are led by a country that not only starts wars in other countries for financial gain but also decided to pull the rug on one of its own cities when it got flooded, said county also has a severely punitive penal system, a culture of sexual violence in its best universities, has rampant and unadulterated gun crime, our country is populated by the most watched and spied upon citizens in the world, etc etc.

Xordium please, this isn't about how evil America or Britain are, I have no idea why you're even bringing that up in this thread.

Answer me a question, do you agree that we should have a law prohibiting sex before marriage? Do you agree with the other clearly anti-female laws that exist in many muslim states? Would you like to see them enacted in Britain?

I really don't understand how you can argue that we should stand idly by and watch without complaint as laws like these, designed to abuse women are enacted and enforced day after day in other countries. You cannot just say "It's their culture let them do what they want". It violates the rights of human beings and as such they make it our business, whether or not any of the governments of the civilised world will stand up to the people upholding these backwards laws is another question.

And yes I just used the backwards description again, because it's the most accurate way of describing these laws without resorting to vulgarisms.

Forget for a second your clear bias against all things western and just examine the matter as it stands that women who are raped in these countries cannot report the crime or else they will be jailed themselves, and if you do not believe this case then there are several other documented cases of this happening to western citizens and the same thing happens every day to women who do not have a voice on the worlds stage provided to them by their citizenship.

It's the fact that you are disagreeing with the statement that the laws, the lawmakers, and by the fact that they represent their country, the country itself is backwards in its treatment of women. I can't understand how you can argue with that with the facts laid before you.
