Afternoon!

I've just received my renewal from NU which, I think, is a rather high £839, it was less than that last year, with 0 no claims! I'm a 21 year old male with a 1.6 Escort and 1 years no claims. I thought I'd go on their website and do a quote, exactly the same details, same car, same me, totally identical....£504! This made me rather angry that a company would reward its loyal customers with an increased premium so I rang them up to see what they’d say. I spoke to a nice Indian guy who basically said that they use two systems to quote people, one for new customers and one for renewals, and that is isn’t uncommon, but I was best to go with the online quote! At this I asked for the phone number for customer service, and guess what, there isn’t one, but there is a fax number!

I’d like to act on my morals and use a different company, but it seems NU are by far the cheapest, if you don’t renew a old policy! Has anyone else found this, and if you haven’t, make sure you check next renewal!

If you dont want that initial renewal for £839, make sure you tell them and take a note of the time/date you called them. Also, get the rep's name too.
They tried to charge me for a weeks worth of insurance when i canceled my insurance prior to my policy end date.

it's quite normal to be honest. If you get the quote ref of the quote you got online then phone the renewals line (try and get someone UK based - the offshore teams are appaling and well known for being that way!) they should be able to match it over the phone :)

Yeah it's an easy way to make money, a lot of people don't bother looking around come renewal time they just take what's offered.

Generally older people are more succeptable to this as their premiums don't tend to go up, and if there is a change either way it's usually pretty minimal.

I couldn't find anyone that'd beat my renewal this year which was quite disappointing really :(

Hey craddy NU sent me a renewal of £505 for my cav and I ended paying £431 by paying online. No one will come close to NU, believe me I spent a day getting quotes recently and NU were about £200 cheaper than anyone else.

Just got my renewal quote with NUD last week, but I'm ditching them as I always get idiots (english or not) on the other end when I speak to them.

Talk with your wallet, and move elsewhere.

When Norwich Union bought out my insurer I got a stupid renewal. I phoned to say I wouldn't be taking it and they instantly slashed £300 off the price (still wasn't competative) I asked what had change that they could suddenly knock off a third of the cost and they made up some stupid excuse  Can't blame them though as there are so many people out there who would just accept it and pay up without questioning it or shopping around.

I got my renewal through last year from Elephant. 1650 quid they wanted. A bit of ringing around and i got them to drop it to £830. Gits :)

Wonder how much this years will be

im with NU for the second year running. they did quote me happy and the renewal quote was actually the lowest i could find so stuck with them.

Same happened a year or two ago with me. Despite the fact I had turned a year older and had a years extra driving experience, not forgetting the extra years no claims it went up. I called up and told the guy to stuff it as he said he wouldn't be able to reduce it.

Went with Admiral, who did me a blindingly good premium. I do, however, despise Admiral as they refuse to offer my mother a competitive quote with me on her insurance (I tend to use her car now and again when I'm at home) and whilst NUD quote us £247 with business class etc. admiral want an extra £720, taking her premium to £938. Their excuse is that NUD are for young drivers and they can't compete. Hmmm, they managed to compete with them when I wanted my own insurance with them. I thought with me being 21 now they would be happy to add me on.

Admiral did the same with me, always best to try and get a new quote on the net, most companies offer discount for taking out insurance this way anyway.

I've never had the same insurance company twice.

They all try it on at renewal time hoping you won't do anything and just stay with them.

i found you can normally talk them into giving you a discount over the phone too... at the end of the day they dont want to lose out on getting their grubby little hands on your dosh.

Thats true, they tried but were still over £100 more than norwich union so I had to leave them.

Its possible it might go down a bit, but they charge for policy admin don't they? I doubt theres much point, why not do an online policy change and see what the price changes to.

Is it really worth saving £2 a month, for the odd chance you might drive to work or exceed your stated mileage?
