I have decided it is time for the TT to go as I may be handing back my company Avensis and I am looking to reduce my outgoings for the short term. I am therefore looking for a reliable car in the £2k-£3k bracket that can act as an only car.

I am fairly convinced about going for a Mondeo, however which engine? Current milage is only likely to be 10-20k, however this could change.

2.5v6 - Lots of low milage fairly new examples at 3k, but 28mpg?
2.0TDCi - Slow and commands a premium
2.0 Petrol - Not as many about and premium over the 2.5
3.0 petrol / 2.2 diesel - Ideal but out of budget

Any thoughts or general advice about Mondeos?

2.0 Petrol is the one to go for.

Ghia X if you want some luxuries.
Zetec if you want the sporty suspension but not as many toys.

You are more likely to find a Zetec though.

When I looked there were far more 2.0's than 2.5's. My choice was a 2.0 petrol Ghia. Imo Ghia is the minimum spec you should aim for as the lesser ones don't even have climate control and the suspension is plenty stiff enough as standard.

I thought climate control was standard on facelift models?

I've got a 2.0 LX and it does the job nicely. I found the 1.8 that I drove felt like a heavy car, whereas the 2.0 was much more spritely and responsive.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 3litre petrol is just the old ST isn't it?

One thing to note, there was a facelift in 2003, after which various things were improved, the interior is nicer, and cruise is standard on all models.

Thanks everyone.

What about the x-type jag as an alternative? Are these likely to cost a lot more to run/maintain (assuming a local independant services it). I have found a 3.0L V6 sport which looks rather nice and gives similar figures in a straight line to the TT (something which I had not even considered a possibility).

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have revised my budgets but have still decided to go for the Mondeo, just need to find exactly what I am after now:

Titanium X
2005 or newer
2.0 or 2.2 Diesel
<£7k

Seems to be a few out there I just need to keep my eyes open.

I haven't driven a 2.0 alternative, but I can vouch that my 1.8 petrol feels like a tank :p

Still, I love it to bits :)

The 2.0 and 1.8 petrols are OK but feel a bit breathless - the 2.0 TDCi 130 is quicker than both IIRC and never feels slow or underpowered

Asides from MPG, anything wrong with the 2.5 V6?

(Sorry for minor thread hijack :) )

I had a V6 (albeit an old ST24), I used to get 35+mpg on trips, better than some 2.0 cars I've owned...

Just make sure the platic waterpump has been replaced with a metal one, though I don't think it's too much of an issue on Mk3s...

I just got a three month old Mondeo Zetec 2.0 TDCI (140).

Compared to the standard 2.0 TDCI (115?) it has some serious grunt when accelerating although its not quite as far ahead in 6th.
