Not another which GPU thread!!!

He has a budget of £450, he wants to play at 1080p with everything turned on and he wants it to last him 2 years and you suggest a 390. Brilliant.

A 980Ti with a bit of an overclock would be close or match the performance of two 390's anyway, and without the potential pitfalls of a multi GPU solution as well.

Yes I do suggest a 390, because for now that is a sensibile choice for 1080p. I don't necessarily like "futureproofing" with GPUs as there's a lot around the corner, especially now.

If he needs the extra horsepower, what's wrong with using the rest of OPs budget to pop another 390 + PSU in? For now, and for the near future, a 390 is fine, and it saves some money in the short term.

By all means, get a 980Ti - It smashes 1080p now and it will continue to do so, but if you are on a budget I'd much rather go the 390 route.

[...]I wouldn't bother with a 390 as you are just buying a new 290 at a higher price. If you are gonna go cheap, go second hand.

Fair point, and also a nice point about Shadowplay - It's one reason why I like NVidia over AMD. The 290 has less VRAM but that's less (probably not) likely to be an issue at 1080p.

You can pick up a 290 for a bargain and it'll tide you over to next year when it'd be better to make a future-based investment.

Get a 980ti, Best performimg card at any resolution or get a fury tri x for £439.99 for excellent performance at any resolution or get a 390 for the best price performance right now.

My only niggle would be the fury tri x with only 4gb of vram when another £60 gets you the best card with 6gb of vram.

I am on a 780 and a 3570k at 3.8ghz and gta v plays amazing on it with everything on ultra/high and high shadows and normal tessellation with msaa x4... I use 1920x1200 resolution.

He could buy two R9 390's for the cost of a 980Ti. Only issue would be his PSU. :p

The OP could also buy a 390 AND and mid-range freesync monitor for £450-500, going for a second hand 290 would allow the OP to get an even better freesync monitor. Even if the FPS drops below 60FPS the gameplay will still be smooth.

He "doesn't want to spend more than he has to", which you don't have to spend £450 to get great performance at 1080p.

Why focus on just that comment. He also said

a £450 budget

I would like something that will last at least 24months before it gets replaced and allows me to play new releases will all the shiny bits switched on

A 390 does not fulfill his criteria in anyway.

More money more problems it was much simpler when I could only afford sub £200 cards and had to make do with a gtx660!

I brought my 7970 in Oct 2013 so maybe 2 years is a unrealistic expectation

Are we likely to see a Nvidia Pascal GPU in 12 months time?

Wonder who derailed it?

Carry on attacking peoples suggestions, it's going to help the OP a hell of a lot more if you do that. :p

You for a start calling me a fanboy for some reason

I am dismissing the suggestion of a 390 because it doesn't fit in with what the OP asked for at all.

What an odd and unhelpful thread this is.

Poor OP

I wouldn't say poor OP, he has been given three entirely valid routes:

980Ti now - Be done with everything for 2-3 years.

Second hand 290 now - Save £300 and get a 16nm card next year with that money.

New 390 now - Save £240 and then use that £240 to buy a new PSU + another 390 in a year or twos time, if he needs the horsepower.

This forum is for advice and all three are perfectly valid. I gave my opinion on which route I would take, so did you. It doesn't make it weird or invalid :)

I think pascal is due sometime in Q4 2016 iirc.

and I am giving my opinion that it is a bad suggestion for what the OP is after.

As I said, a 390 cant play everything at 1080p now with all the bells and whistles on so my view is that it is going to be no good for the OP.

But it does though...

Do these bells and whistles include lameworks? Useless gimmick in most games anyway and is nothing more than Nvidia trying to get people to buy their "higher end" cards. TW3 for example, it adds nothing.

Trying to lure someone into a purchase they don't need to make would also be classed as fanboyism. A 390 fits the bill better than a 980Ti, the OP could even buy a freesync monitor if he goes that route... i.e. Getting FAR more for his money.

The 7970 came out in early 2012 - I bought mine in November 2012 and got rid of it shortly after GTA came out... I wonder why? :p

I'd say expecting 2-3 years out of a GPU isn't unrealistic at all, your 7970 theoretically lasted 3 years, you just purchased it a year after it came out.

I believe NVidia expect the Pascal GPUs to be out in Q2 next year, so 6-9 months time, although I'd say 12 months is fair all things considered.

Honestly don't get blinkered into having all the bells and whistles, it makes a marginal difference in image quality from Very High to ultra.

Can you stretch to £499.99 for a 980ti? Or Would you prefer to spend less and get a 390 and have a few things on very high instead of ultra and not know the difference?

Lets say a 980ti gets 60fps in GTA V on Ultra settings for £499 and a 390 gets 55fps but with Very high settings for £249 Choose one for your money and enjoy.

Now future games is an unknown with DX12 around the corner so the best card for longevity would obviously be the 980ti.
