Not another which GPU thread!!!

In the interests of full disclosure, if we are going to warn against the 980ti based purely on a hypothetical, shouldn't we also mention that a lot of people seem to be ditching cards like the 295X2 due to crossfire problems, instead of recommending crossfire without mentioning it?

The usual crossfire has problems narrative from people who probably haven't used it. From personal experience, I think dual gpu's are fantastic and work well where a game supports them. The fact is that crossfire is no worse or better than SLI support-wise and arguably has better scaling in most games. Of course some games don't support dual gpu's but the majority do and work well. If multi-gpu's were as bad as some allege then why would many on these very boards have them.

Anyway, the OP wants a single gpu AFAIK. My post merely mentioned all the options available and the potential for going dual gpu's. If he did crossfire the 7970 the performance boost would beat a gtx 980/390x single card. It would be the cheapest option by far until the next gen gpu's come out.

I'm going to weigh in on crossfire. The reason I didn't suggest it in my post was because of the issues I had with it. I ran 7950s in xfire with no issues, and it was great. Then I moved to xfire 290s and AMD left us without drivers for 6 months. Yes, a whole 6 months of new games with no xfire support for major titles. I don't think SLI is better or worse than xfire, but being at the mercy of drivers and game developers when it comes to making use of 50% of my performance was a ballache and a half. When it worked it was great. I'm much happier now with a single card though. I prefer my 980ti to my 290s even though performance is comparable because I always get to use all of it and don't get weird driver issues.

That said, it does offer great value for money if you don't mind fiddling a bit or occasionally having to wait for driver releases or game patches. I would go multi gpu again if it made sense, but I'll avoid it if I can do so reasonably.
