Hi

I've got a Microsoft Surface Pro which only has 1 USB C port. When I plug in my dongle to read SD cards and put in an external hard drive to back up my work it says there's not enough power from the port to power everything and then it just disconnects.

Are there any workarounds? What was wrong with good old USB 3.0..!

What are you powering it from a PC or proper wall socket charger?

Do you know what charging protocol it uses?

QC or USB PD?

Workaround: don't try and run the hard drive through that dongle. It probably doesn't identify itself as a device which can draw the needed current. Try a basic USB hub or splitter instead.

I've always found external HDDs flaky, and sensitive to long or thin cables etc. Moreso on laptops.
