Not getting any sound on a Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA

Hi guys

just set up a new build using the above mobo, using winxp with latest updates

have installed all drivers from Asus website including the sound drivers

but the sound device doesn't want to activate, i have the sound enabled in bios, but when i go to sound in control panel, it says "no audio device"

have read that there was an issue with a windows update that killed realtek sound and there was a patch fix out for it, i tried it but no luck

this is what it is: " 7.1 CH Windows® Vista™ Premium Level HD Audio (ALC888 Audio Codec) - Realtek,

have also gone to realtek for the latest drivers and still no luck :(

don't know what else to try really, has anyone had the same problem?

bought this mobo while back from MM, not used it until today

speakers work fine and also using the Green port at the back of the mobo like usual.

any advice?

What does Device Manager say?

this is also a weird one

not sure what the pci device is, as i dont have any pci installed apart from a x700 pci-express gfx card which i have installed cat 8.1 drivers for.

i have however 2 sata hard drives and 3 ide hard drives installed.

XP is running off a sata hard drive fine

any ideas?

Realtek just release new drivers for their HD audio - have you tried that? I have the same board, although I call it an Asrock (aren't they made by asus anyways?) and sound have never been a problem for me....do you get the little realtek icon in the system tray?

when i install the drivers, (i know from past mobos), i should get the icon in the system tray

with this one, i get nothing, installs like usual, then says must restart

so i restart and nothing!

i think my only option at the moment is to use a pci soundcard, no biggy mind.

using XP Pro as my OS

one thing i did install which was out of the ordinary was when i did windows update, there was an update for my saitek eclipse keyboard, it was optional so i chose that, it was called "HID drivers" or something.

i think i did this before installing the sound drivers.

i may try uninstall this tonight and see if that cures the problem.

Shouldn't be affecting anything.

Also, asrock and asus and completely seperate entities, although I believe they have the same mother company. If your downloading Asus drivers, I wouldn't be surprised if that's why it isn't working.

Have you installed everything from the driver CD, and most importantly the motherboard drivers? (prob via 4 in 1 or something like that).

First check in the bios that on board sound is enabled, secondly remove the pci device (with question mark) from the device manager and redect, or reboot. Hopefully it should then install.

There is no reason why it wouldn't be working.

yeh my bad, that was a typo, i am using the asrock drivers

the mobo didn't come with a cd, but used the site to get all the latest drivers, am using bios 2.2 which i believe is the latest bios

have installed the Hyperion 4in1 drivers which installed fine

il delete the pci device and reboot tonight and will update on what happened

thanks!

If you get issues, I can try and copy the original CD for you or send original files etc :) (free I mean).

I would be tempted to remove the drivers first, then delete the pci device. (or try reinstalling the pci device drivers (right click on the icon and reinstall drivers of your choosing).

BTW, I'm using the original bios with absolutely no issues. Not sure why anyone would change?

right, got to the bottom of this

i found on a forum, someone had made an addon patch (like an update), this fixed the problem and now i have sound!

thanks for everyone's help

much appreciated

lol, nice one :D When you said 'all the latest update' hadn't taken into account you'd gone a little further than most! ;)

Glad you sorted it.
